My DS never took a paci in the early months...I tried all of them. Well, that has all chnaged over the past few weeks. He is now suddenly finding comfort at night with his Soothie. However, he is now waking up 8-10 times each night for us to go in and reinsert the paci for him. Have any of you experienced this. Do I just keep doing it and eventually he will grow out of this phase? Do I break him of it right away and allow him to self sooth instead (not sure if he is too young for this though). Any thoughts, I am SO sleep deprived with getting up every 45 mins!

We did this in the NICU and when we got home it helped some. Try and attached the paci (I know it might be hard with the Soothies) a washcloth or small cloth. THis will be able to "prop" up the paci to help them keep it in better.

We used to use the soothie paci but Grace got sick of hers and we switched to platex ortho pros and they love these paci's. I have noticed they stay in their mouth alot better than the soothies ever did. Big bonus too they are alot cuter than those ugly soothies.

we did this with my dd at 4 mos. it was hard - the first night she cried for 20 minutes. the second for 5. then it was over at night. we did this with the blessing of our ped, b/c i was afraid to let her cry.

Oh my, I could have written this post a few weeks ago. I swear I was up and down our hallway ten times one night reinserting Ellie's paci!! So, finally on a Thursday night (I'm off Fri-Sun), I decided it was time for a change. We gave her the paci at bedtime. After that I did one check if she was crying to make sure there was nothing wrong (dirty diaper, temperature, sick etc) and after that we let her work it out on her own.

Thankfully she never worked it out (she doesn't cry so much as baahs like a sheep increasing in intensity) more than ten minutes, but she did wake up about five or six times that night. It's been much better since, but we still have a couple of wakings here and there and it's HARD not to go give the paci when I know it will put her back to sleep, but I don't want to go back to being a slave to the paci!!

I remember reading in the Happiest Baby on the Block book that you should get rid of the pacifier around 4 months old.

    Good Luck,
    Suzi

Okay but what do you do when DS are 3 weeks old and crying in the night 40 times for their pacifier?
I notice it happens every 2 hours by the 3 hour is when we feed (as per nicu instructions) so i sit htere for the last hour doing hte paci thing and i swear its hard not to scream and rant and rave.. i'd love to CIO but daughter wakes up and the downstairs tenants would kill me. If he is waking up wanting paci early does that mean he is hungry earlier? Ive tried feeding him 2 1/2 hours and he will eat but he just takes forever to eat - in general it can even take him up to 1 hour to eat 50cc.
going bonkers. please help sleep deprived mommy and daddy!

For the question about the 2 week old- yes, I would feed them rather than pop the paci if it is going on like that during the night.

For the op, I say go cold turkey we did with our older son and with the girls...tough at first but our son and one of the girls found their thumbs and are rather happy little sleepers!! The other one? Well that would be a different post all together ;)

I think he's probably old enough to self soothe. Can he get hands to mouth easily? If he can suck his thumb/fingers, you're golden.

Kelly, I would go for it and either take it away, or go the opposite and put about 10 in the crib with him, and hope that he finds one! :hug99:
