So I am 10wks prego and happened to get a cold on Thursday. Since we went through a fertility doctor, I haven't seen my OBGYN yet, but will on Jan. 7th. I called the OBGYN's office to ask them what I could take for a cold and they said I could take either basic Sudafed or Robitussin. I went to the pharmacy and of course there are 20 different kinds of Sudafed and Robitussin. I go up to the pharmacist to ask which one is safe and he looks at me like I just asked if I could take illegal drugs. He said "your doctor told you to take sudafed?" I replied that it was the nurse who I spoke to and he replied "Well is the nurse your doctor?" He then asked " How many weeks are you?" and I replied 10wks. He then said "At 10wks your babies brain, eyes, and organs are developing and I am not recommending anything for you, you don't want to chance it." He had an accent and as he turned away from me he states "I can't believe these Americans." So I walked out of the pharmacy and broke down and started crying. I spent the weekend with orange juice, soup, and water. I am feeling better, but can't believe he would say something like that to a hormonal pregnant woman.

    UGH!!

I can't believe he would say that to any customer, let alone a pregnant woman! Ugh. I would never go back to that pharmacy, I might even file a complaint! Sorry that happened. I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. And fwiw, I took sudafed with both of my pregnancies and my babies are all just fine!

I'm sorry that he handled it so rudely. Maybe he was talking about the nurse that suggested you take the medicine and not you. My OB is pretty strict on NO medicines like Sudafed or Robitussen until after the first trimester (after all the major development has happened). So, the silver lining is that he really was just looking at your babies best interest even if he went about it the wrong way.

Wow I'd be upset too, I had something similar happen at my walmart pharmacy!

My ob also says sudafed and robi are safe during the first trimester, and I honestly trust my ob more than the pharmacist, the pharmacists has a broad knowledge of meds, but my ob knows specifically what's safe for pregnancy!

Pregnant or not, I probably would of turned around and slapped him. Then again I do have a bit of a temper, but what they said was just wrong. I'm so sorry you had to hear that from him. Sometimes people really do not think before they speak, and there is nothing that we can do about it.

I'd definitely file a complaint. I'm sure it's pretty easy to do too, just go to their website and find an email link for customer service. If anything, you may at least get some coupons or a gift card for your trouble.

My doctor approved plain sudafed and robitussin during pregnancy as well. I've also heard this from all of my friends her were pregnant.

GRRRR- what a jerk! I am so sorry. My Dr also okay'd sudafed but said to take only as needed/sparingly. The best thing is that you are feeling better! Sorry you had a crappy weekend!
