Did anyone do overnight training before their kids were waking up dry? My girls have been pt'd for a month and Emma has been waking dry after naps and in the morning for several days now. I would like to ditch diapers for her totally, but am pretty sure that Lauren will start squawking in her ear "I still need diapers...I'm not dry...I wear diapers for nap...", etc. which will make Emma want diapers too. Monkey see monkey do in this house for sure.

So I was thinking I'll leave them in undies for naps to start with to see if Lauren can really hold it. Am I nuts to think this might work?

You really can't "sleep train", the body is not awake, therefore, the child doesn't have control over whether or not they can stay dry. Unless you want to change sheets often, I wouldn't bother. When they are ready, they will be ready.

That's what I was thinking too. It's just funny how she has more control than her sister during the day and at sleeptime it's the complete opposite!!

Michelle, Marcus day trained 6 months before Jon, but couldn't stay dry at night for another year and a half. Jon stayed dry the day from the day he trained.

    ITA with this. :good:

I think a good place to start is putting them in underwear at naps. With Caroline we waited until she started waking up with diapers on to use the bathroom at night. Emilie and Trevor have been in underwear for naps for awhile now, but they are both still in pull ups at night. Sometimes they wake up dry and sometimes not. There have been a few times one of them will wake up in the middle of the night to go potty. But until they start doing that pretty consistently I am keeping them in pull ups at night. I am in no hurry to get rid of the pull ups at night right now. It's more worrisome to wonder if they will wake up dry/wet, etc.

I was lucky in that both of them day/night trained at the same time - Abby's been out of diapers now for over 2 months and Ian doesn't sleep in diapers anymore either...Abby's had a few night accidents but I can count the on one hand...

now if I can get Ian to consistently poop on the potty we'll be good to go...

I kept them in pullups for probably 2 months after both of them were dry most nights because I was always thinking that was going to be the night they would wake up wet & I would be changing sheets in the middle of the night. I hate changing sheets in the night! Anyway, you really can't teach them, eventually they will just be dry then you can switch to underwear. Sounds like they are both doing awesome!

I waited until they woke up dry consistently. And even then, I had to go back to pull ups for Lily because she started having accidents about once a week overnight. I'd wait until they wake up dry every night. It's not something that can be really controlled while they are asleep.

Gracie trained day and night at the same time, but she was also 3y2m when she trained.

My DD still wears pull ups for bedtime. I wish she didnt but she wets and i dont want to be doing bedding everyday of the week. Her brother on the other hand since he has been potty trained has only peed the bed 2x. It just takes time.

Nadia wasn't dry at night until age 4, almost 5. I still had her in a pull-up at night this year! Just didn't want to deal with changing the sheets, even though the pull-up was only wet once every couple months, if she slept in very late or had too much to drink right before bed.

And, she's been daytime trained since about 26 months, so really, there's no correlation. I'd just wait until you have consistently dry pull-ups!

I think that starting with nap is a great way to go. I used to put them in pull ups for naps and then we gave up naps... :D but the night thing was just hit or miss. They were both 4 (Alison, JUST in the past 2 weeks) are dry consistently over night. Martin has about 1 accident every other month.......

They just have to either be able to wake to potty (which Martin will occasionally do) or be able to be dry all night. It's a bladder thing. Might not be up to you....kwim?

I kept them in pull ups until they woke up dry consistantly, but I started to get them out of bed and set them on the potty before that. Once a night I would pick them up, carry them to the potty (very nearby) set them on it, they'd pee, then I carry them back to bed. I did this either just before I went to bed myself, or if that was particularly early, I usually get up once in the night myself, so I'd do it then.

I get what Sharon is saying about body control, but I do think this helped contribute to my girls early training (night trained by 30 months)before I finished with the pull ups they had started getting themselves up, rather than me getting them up in the night. Two piece pijamas made it easier for them to go by themselves.

Thanks for all the input. Emma has been dry for a week now, so I think I'm going to attempt to and hope that Lauren doesn't discourage her from it. That's the hardest part for me.

I appreciate your words of wisdom!! :friends:

I'll agree with those who said it just depends on the child. My youngest two (3 and 4) are dry at night. They wore diapers to bed until they were consistently dry in the morning. For both of them it didn't take long after they were dry PTed.

However, my oldest is 6 1/2 and needs a pull up at night. She sleeps so soundly that she never wakes up when she has to go. It will happen eventually so I don't stress about it.

Michelle, I agree with everyone else. If Emma is good to go during naps, go for it! However, since you're already keeping diapers/pullups on Lauren during naps and she discourages Emma, no biggie. Time is your best friend right now. It'll happen eventually and there's no way to make it go any faster. I think you're doing the best and wisest thing. GL!

Amy gave up diapers at nap because she was usually waking up dry after nap. Even so, she wet her pants during nap at least once a week for the next several weeks. I would have kept her in diapers longer, but the daycare teachers wanted to switch her to underwear -- I guess it was easier for them to change her clothes than to put a diaper on her every day.

Sarah still wears a pullup at nap and she's past 3.5. The one time she requested to wear undies, she peed in her sleep. I think she probably could get the hang of staying dry at nap, but she's afraid of having accidents, and it doesn't matter to me either way, so we'll just keep using pullups as long as the daycare teachers are willing to put up with them.

I don't foresee either of them being dry at night for months yet. They wake up soaked every morning.

My guys didn't ditch diapers at exactly the same time. Trent was dry in the morning for a week so I put him in underwear at night. Trevor wasn't yet so he got a diaper. He noticed that Trent was wearing underwear to bed and asked to wear them too. I told him that he could as soon as he'd been dry in the morning for a week. He managed a few days so I let him try and then we had wet sheets. I told him he wasn't quite ready but was close and we'd try again when he was dry for a week. It didn't take long and he was ready too. I believe the fact that they're ID and hit all of the milestones at the same time (or close to it) is strong evidence that bladder control during sleep is developmental.

    THANK YOU ladies!! :bow2:

So get this...I've been talking to Emma about how when we get back from Ohio we're going to stop wearing diapers at naptime and bedtime since she has been staying dry. Lauren pipes up that she wants to also. So I assured that she will but we'll have to wait until she starts waking up dry in the mornings and after nap. Wouldn't you know that she has been dry for 3 days now and proudly proclaims it when I go in to get them! I was shocked to say the least. I'm not taking bets on her though. I might still wait. But I'm definitely moving forward with Emma. :good:
