I’m hitting a wall with my sociology essay on urban communities. I sit down, stare at the screen, and nothing comes out. Last time, I forced myself to write 500 words, but it was pure garbage—disconnected ideas, no flow. I scrapped it and missed the deadline. Anyone got tricks for getting unstuck? I’m tempted to just give up and binge Netflix instead. How do you push through writer’s block?

Ugh, writer’s block is the worst! I used to freeze up like that on my history papers. What works for me is switching gears—step away, go for a walk, or even sketch out random ideas on paper. Also, picking a super specific angle helps me start. I found this guide at https://www.ozessay.com.au/blog/discursive-essay/ on nailing thesis statements, which gave me a way to focus and just start writing. Maybe try jotting down one thing you find cool about urban communities? It could spark something.

When I get stuck writing, I just lean into whatever’s distracting me and turn it into fuel. Like, for my last environmental science paper, I was procrastinating by watching nature docs. So I used that—wrote about deforestation from a perspective I got from the doc. No strict method, just let your brain wander to something you’re into and tie it to the topic. Keeps it less like a chore and more like a puzzle.
