I am not a potty pusher. We have the equipment, it's visible/available to them in the bathroom. Tonight after bath Nick kept telling me pee-pee, pee-pee. So, we dried him off to sit on the toilet and (with lots of dramatic grunting and pushing), urinated.

I couldn't believe it. I expected him to sit for two seconds get up and want to flush. I squealed and started a hearty round of applause and Joe was saying "Yay, Ni-EE!" He was so tickled with himself.

I really am not ready to actively train them. I know Joe is definitely not ready. Nick could be, but I really want it to be initiated by them.

I think I'm just going to keep it available to them and see what happens, on their terms. Any thoughts on that?

Very cool!!!! Here is my two cents, continue to make it available and don't push it. You will know in your gut if/when he is ready and here will also be some more concrete signs (i.e., he is initiating the restroom visits on his own, he is waking up dry from naps, he is holding it for longer periods of time and voiding larger amounts, etc.).

Wow, I am impressed... my guys were NOT interested in the potty at that age!

    That's very cool!

Your approach is pretty much what we have done. They've been peeing (or even pooping) on the potty occasionally since just before 2 years, but we have yet to reach any kind of consistency. They go through whole weeks when they do not care about the potty at all (and will refuse to use it if we ask), then have weeks in a row when they have mostly dry diapers and pee every time we put them on the potty.

But I'm still waiting for the important stage when they TELL me that they have to go. In the meantime, at least I am confident that they understand the mechanics of the potty. It never hurts to practice!
