So I am a newbie in all of this! Nicholas woke up at 12:15am screaming! We let him cry for a bit, then realized he wasn't going to sleep and something was bothering him. I grabbed the Motrin while DH got him from his crib. I touched him and he was on fire he was so hot! I felt so bad for the little guy! I changed his pjs into something a bit cooler and we gave him Motrin. His temp was 101.6! Our first fever in 16 months! I was a wreck! He laid his head on my shoulder and passed out. Sooo sad! I ended up crying when I went to bed I was so worried about him(that and extra hormones don't help!).

He woke again at 2:20 and 3:30(which I went in and held him and he fell back asleep). He then slept until 7:30. DH said he soaked through his diaper but that he seemed fine. When I got up at 8, he was rather fussy, which is not like him. I checked his temp and it was 100.5 so I gave him more Motrin. He's eating and drinking fine-even playing.

So-other than the Motrin-is there anything else I should be doing? I haven't called the pedi yet. I figure he's eating, drinking, etc. I don't know if it's teething-as they have never gotten a fever with teeth before. He does not have his molars, whereas his brother does. Am I missing anything? I realized last night I don't do well when they are sick!

It appears the fever is responding well to the motrin, i.e. going down. If it wasn't responding or increased I'd be a little more concerned...or if it persists for 3 or more days.

My ped doesn't get too worked up unless the fever is over 103 (for those 9 months and older)and is not responsive to motrin and/or tylenol or if they keep a low grade fever for 3 or more days (without other obvious signs of a problem).

Sounds like you're doing what works. Hang in there!

I agree to some extent. If he wakes up a lot again tonight, I would get him seen tomorrow. This is a 3 day weekend for some people (I know a lot of doctor's offices won't be closed on Monday but you never know), so you don't want to get caught with a sick kid over the long weekend.

 it's always hard when our babies are sick!!

If he had had a cold already, then the fever could be a sign of an infection (ears, sinuses, whatever). But, it's probably just a virus. You are doing just fine!! If he becomes miserable, you can alternate tylenol and ibuprofen (motrin)...and then you can give them closer together to keep him happier. Like you said, make sure he continues to stay hydrated...and you'll make it through.

Thanks ladies! His fever shot up to 101.8 this afternoon and I gave him motrin before I left for my appt. He was fussy on and off the remainder of the day(and wanted to ONLY watch Baby Einstein Baby Noah!). By bedtime he was done! I gave him tylenol before bed, as it was too early for the motrin. I hope he sleeps tonight. I hate seeing him sick!

What do you all do at night? Do you set your alarm to check on them(provided they are not constantly waking)? His room is right across the hall from ours and I always have the monitor on.

If he still has the fever in the am, I will call the pedi to see what they say. Thanks for the reminder about the long weekend!

We have been dealing with fevers for 2 weeks now. The ped said you can alternate motrin and tylenol. So at 1:00, motrin and at 4:00 tylenol and then the 6 hours will be there for the motrin again at 7:00.

eta- I just noticed my boys are a little older so I would see what your dr says first.

Yes! Thank you for asking. I was telling myself I need to get here and update! I gave him tylenol before he went to bed, as it was too early for motrin. He slept all night long and was fine when he woke up! He was his usual cheery self! He got up at 7 with his brother. I noticed he was quite tired by 11 and thank goodness had lunch started! He was falling asleep in his highchair!

They are now both down for a nap. Let's hope it's a long one!

how's it going today? hope it's a long nap today.

Fever wasn't that high and responding well so I don't get worried about those kinds of fevers. Hang in there. the first one is the toughest!

Thank you! What is considered high for a fever? I was worried when it went over 101! He took a good nap(he's my good napper-almost 2 hours). I still think he is "off" a bit. They woke at 7 and by 10:30/10:45am he was screaming at my ankles, I picked him up, and he instantly laid his head on my shoulder and fell asleep! I did nap at 12:45pm only 3 days ago! He fell asleep in his highchair as well.

After nap-he was MISERABLE. Didn't know what he wanted, nothing I did made him happy(until I gave him yogurt). He didn't eat too much either(yogurt, scrambled eggs, half a banana, and french fries). That was it. He was given chx nuggets for lunch and chx noodle soup/grilled cheese for dinner.

I changed his diaper and he had a REALLY loose b/m. So maybe he is fighting something still. Once he figured out what he wanted, he was happy, running around and everything. I don't know. I'm perplexed!

What are signs of ear infections??? Could he have one??? I used to bang the cupboards(I had A LOT when I was little)!

DS gets fevers like that where he is miserable but has no other signs or symptoms. Mostly lasts for a day or two and then goes away. So much like what you are describing, minus the falling asleep on my shoulder. But he does get that glazed look in his eyes and I know he needs to go lay down. The only thing I ever linked it to was his teeth. Your DS could be getting his molars or fighting off a virus. I would think if his fever returns you could give the pedi a call and see what they say.
