For my 1000th post, I thought I'd start a topic that I've been pondering all day.

Jake got his first cold today. Can you believe we have been so lucky and neither boy has been really sick until 8.5 months?? Anyway, he is also getting his first tooth so double whammy. He started coughing last night and woke this morning with a drippy nose. Then the sneezing started. Let's just say he'll have no trouble competing with his brother for snot rockets.

Do you guys have any suggestions for wiping his nose? I don't want it to get sore and he already cries whenever I go for it. Is it okay to give him Tylenol even though he doesn't have a fever? DH is very concerned about over medicating. I have no trouble over medicating myself, but it's so different for my kids.

    Thanks!

I used "Little Noses" infant saline nose spray and a bulb syringe/aspirator. My boys hated it but it was pretty effective. We ran a humidifier in their room too. I bought Vicks baby rub for congestion/cough trouble and we used baby vapo-bath. We did Tylenol but no more than once a day. If figured that if I was stuffy I'd probably have a headache or body aches too, so I wanted to give them something. I've been told that Tylenol is OK-just don't exceed the recommended daily amount.

I ditto the Infant Noses. It really helps clear out their sinus passages. Warm baths with lots of steam, and lots of liquids. I hope he feels better soon.

Ditto everything. We also gave lots of fluids to replace what was being lost through mucus. You are so so very lucky that you made it this far without having colds! Poor little babies (and mommy too!). I hope they feel better soon.

Ditto the previous posters! The humidifier at night really helped our boys. I almost never use tissues because their little noses get irritated so quickly- the saline with a bulb syringe. Good luck! I hope he's feeling better soon!!

we do use tissues, and i apply vaseline a few times a day to keep from getting sore. i swear by little noses drops, i keep tons stocked at home, we used them daily for the first few months, as our ped told us that using them twice a day was beneficial in preventing colds and ear infections!

At that age, I used the saline drops and nasal bulb. I also used the humidifier in the house (or bring them into the shower with you to help steam out their heads). We must be married to the same guy. DH is very concerned about 'over medicating.' I used Tylenol in the evening or if they were super fussy/clingy. Call your pedi to make sure you get the correct dose though. You could try to wipes their noses but put some aquaphor or vaseline on it to keep it from getting sore. I have no idea what to do for the cough. My girls have had 4 colds and they've had nasal congestion and sneezing, but never real coughing. Hang in there and I hope everyone feels better soon. :hug99:

Your lucky. Mine are 5 weeks and have their first cold. I guess that is the price you pay for having an older sibling in school and bringing home all the germs. The dr said to use saline drops and the bulb syringe to clear their noses. He also said to make sure they get enough fluids. We can't give them any medication yet so they are just being uncomfortable, poor babies. Good luck.

I didnt read the other responses but I swear by the PediaCare gentle vapors plug-in. I used it when the girls were born and had that newborn stuffiness plus the dry heat, and I used it again last week when they had a little cold. The thing is so great, its like vapor rub air freshner. It even got rid of my winter bloody noses! I also used a coolmist vaporizer and the little noses spray and the booger sucker.
(BTW, my girls ended up with an ear infection each too, one started with a cough and the other with a drippy nose. Hopefully he wont get one!)

    Hope he feels better soon!
