Well, I know I'm a little late getting my birth story posted...it's been two months since my twins arrived and I can't believe how quickly time flies. Anyhow, I just wanted to post up because back when I spent my days in the expecting forum, I so enjoyed reading about everyone else's birth experience. Now that things have settled down a little and I can finally come up for some air, I'd like to submit mine....

My twins were born May 13, 2009 at exactly 36 weeks via c-section, a week shy of their original scheduled c-section. I went to my OB appointment the afternoon before on the 12th, and the ultrasound revealed that baby girl only grew about 4 ounces during the previous two weeks, while her brother put on almost a whole pound. They had always been measuring within a few ounces of each other during my entire pregnancy. My doctor said that along with my ever-increasing blood pressure and profound swelling and pain, it would be a prudent move to go ahead and take them in the morning. So she consulted with the perinatologist and they both agreed that we should move up the c-section. I was a happy camper at the prospect of some relief because by then, I could hardly walk and the pain was getting to be too much. As it was, my DH was helping me into and out of bed, and even had to help dress me because I couldn't put on pants by myself. UGH! It was really, really bad.

The morning of the 13th, I was admitted and prepped for the c-section. Two anesthesiologists failed at four painful attempts to place the epidural due to my swelling, so after almost 45 minutes of trying, they went ahead and did a spinal. Five minutes later, at 12:45 pm and 12:46 pm, we welcomed Ethan Michael and Isabella Rose into our arms and I have never been so happy in my life. We were all expecting Ethan to be in the 6-pound range and Isabella to be in the 5-pound range -- at least that's what the ultrasound estimations were looking like. Well, Ethan weighed 5 lb 2 oz and Isabella weighed 4 lb 1 oz. and they both measured 17 inches. Neither baby required any NICU time thankfully; however, Ethan's Oxygen levels were in the middle 80s, so they gave him oxygen for about 6 hours until he could keep his levels sustained in the middle 90s by himself. Other than that, they were perfectly healthy and perfectly hungry! Now, after 8 wks, they have doubled their birthweight and are deliciously plump and huggable!

As far as mama, I had been anxious over the c-section and what recovery from that would be like, but it was a piece of cake. In fact, the only post partum issue I had was dealing with the horrendus edema left over from pregnancy, and that resolved after about two weeks. DH and I look back on that whirlwind of a day in complete awe and are so thankful to have these little ones in our lives after many years of trying to conceive. It gets pretty hairy sometimes but we couldn't imagine things any other way.

So, with that, it's on to the first year! Good luck and best wishes to everyone who's expecting their little bundles!
