Does anyone else's back hurt? I feel like I'm always bending over in an awkward position to feed, change, pick up the babies, etc.... My lower back hurts constantly and what really scares me is that they aren't even that heavy yet. Anyone else in the same boat?

My back hurts too, but I think it is not from picking up the babies now, but a result of my HUGE belly during pregnancy.

Mine are 6 months old and I still have terrible back pain at times. I think it was the 10 weeks of strict bedrest during the pregnancy. I actually have dreams that I am still pregnant and I think it's because I'm waking up with the same awful back pain I had when I was preggers. I have not been consistent with working out again...I'm hoping that some strength training will help.

Mention it to your OB, just in case, but
I had back pain later on and you have to be really careful not to throw your back out - just imagine how hard THAT would be if you couldn't bend over at all!!! Who would do all the work?!!
If you can get help for a day or two (ha ha ha! I know) to rest your back, that helped me, and then you really need to pay attention EVERY single time you pick them up. If you can squat down to lift them using your legs, do it. (I have really nice glutes now from doing that all year! ha ha)
Don't breastfeed in bed (that really hurt my back!). Find a comfortable chair or glider.
Pull down the drop side of the crib when you get them out of bed, or step up onto a step-stool (or phonebooks) so that it is easier to pick them up out of their beds. Try to keep your back as straight as possible and pay attention to your posture when you are walking, sitting, and feeding them.
There are some great back exercises and stretches you can do to strengthen your back (who has time? I know, but I started doing a few at night for a minute and I swear it helped. I have had back issues in the past, and did some of the stretches the Physical Therapist gave me. Often back pain is from weak abs.) Here are a few stretches - but I am NOT a doctor or physical therapist, so you should consult one.

mine comes and goes, i figure the first time it felt this way was when they were about 1 month old, and i think i made a "false move" when i picked up the carrier to take it downstairs....since then i have days when it's terrible....heating pads and DH applying pressure to the area has helped

I had a terrible pain in my back on the side after the girls were born (it felt like a rib poking my lung) - this went on until the girls were about 2 mos. old. My doc says it's from carrying twins, then the stress of taking care of them, and of course we are now moving our bodies differently, ie. picking up, trying to nurse or feed, rock etc. and the body just is not used to the different positions. I would recommend stretching when you have time (ha! I know what's that?) but even after the babes go down lay on the floor and do some stretches - even for 3 minutes will help. I still get back pin, but my girls are now 20 and 22 lbs - so it's a different kind of pain - but I do still stretch every morning - it really helps. and I ain't gettin' any younger...... Good Luck

    Hey,

I have the same problem! I asked my doctor today at my six week follow up and he said my back pain is normal. He of course told me of the proper way to bend and pick up the babies as well as strength exercises I can do.

He said that my back is taking it's time getting back to the way it use to be. He said our spine actually curves during pregnancy to help carry all the baby weight and the our back muscles stretch also to help take on the load. HE said because of this, it can take months for your back to go back to it's normal state. He said exercising will help tighten the muscle but it will eventually go back on it's own. But till then he said to be careful and treat it like a bad back.
