organizing clothes

What has been the best way of organizing clothes? I am having b/g twins and debating between haging them by size and then by sex or by sex first or what. The problem is that I have a good amount of matching clothes and I know if they aren't together I won't remember that!

 

HAHAHAHA! :rotflmbo: :rotflmbo: You throw them on the closet floor and then grab whatever is on the top of the pile. If you happen to pull out one pink and one blue outfit, then you place them on the appropriate child. But a lot of the time, for the first few months, your son will wear pink and "butt ruffles" and your daughter blue. My son is now called "Mr. Cupcake" for that very reason. :FIFblush:

 

I would probably divide the clothing up into three categories - boy / girl / matching - and then within each catergory I'd hang them by size.

 

This is how we did it when we were organzing the kids' clothes originally. That lasted a week or two and for the next year I think I just rotated laundry baskets and pulled clean clothes out as needed and at the end of the day (or latest spit up incident) it went into the dirty basket. Once that got washed, it came back to the room to get picked through for clean clothes again. lol

 

I have 2 plastic tubs and an amazing memory. Boy in one tub, girl in another. The babies don't have their own room. Their crib is in my office. Their clothes are in the living room. No room for a dresser. When they grow out of the crib (at about 18 months or so) they'll go upstairs and be seperated in to boy or girl room accordingly then they'll have dressers and closet space and a nice twin size bed. I've tried organizing the tubs, however I'm the only one that keeps them that way. Jason rumages through the entire thing when what he was looking for was RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM THE ENTIRE TIME (can you tell that's a pet peeve of mine?) so I don't bother anymore.

 

we have an amazing closet with shelves and a bit of hanging... I don't have as much "matching" for hanging, so I have 3 short rows, girl, boy, bigger sizes for both.

on the shelves I have a section for matching (like you said, if its not together.... it won't get worn together), then I have sections for girl and boy. I got crazy with the label maker and it really helps keep me organized. "girl jeans" "boy jeans", "girl sets" "boy sets" etc.

I also have 3 drawers. 1 boy for shirts and shorts, 1 girl, for shirts and shorts, and then and extra - I put their long sleeved stuff in there.

I have to keep it all labeled, and even then my dh never puts anything away, even though it seems pretty easy...

anyway, I agree with "boy, girl, both" sections.

OH... and when you are hanging things up... take a onesie and make sure that the sizing of all the "6mo" ones are the same... and put the ones that are bigger or smaller in the other sizes. Ralph Lauren ran really small on the boy onesie type things... and I wish I'd started wearing some of them sooner!

In the closet I have a boy section and a girl section and within those sections items are organized by size.

In their dresser there are 4 drawers that are organized as follows: current boy clothes, current girl clothes, out of season boy clothes, out of season girl clothes

 

Definitly organize by size- I had to go through the closet of newborn clothes to find the tiniest stuff when I brought home a baby who weighed 4.11. Then I would do center stack of matching, b/g on either side of it. I'm a laundry freak, so I separate everything- onesies, long sleeve onesies, snap together, etc.

 

I have a dresser. 3 drawers on the left 3 on the right and 3 smaller ones in the middle. The closet is not organized at all. I try to do pink hangers for girl and blue for boy..sometimes it works but most of the time I do not have the time to care. For the dresser, girl is on left, neutral in the middle and boy on the right.

However, most of the time its rotating dirty laundry baskets to what just came out the dryer hehe. I dont have time to organize, i need to though or they wont wear all their clothes

 

I have 3.5 month old b/g twins, so I understand what you are going through!

This is how I did it: We have a single-door closet, with two rods (top and bottom). The bottom rod is a little bigger (the closet extends behind the wall a bit) so this is my daughter's rod -- she has more clothes because I have an DD7 who has provided some hand-me-downs. The top rod is my son's. Anything that matches goes at the left side of my daughter's rod since there is extra room.

Also, I have little clothing dividers with sizes on them that divide up the clothes so I can find the right sizes. I agree with a previous post on checking to see that all 6 month sizes are similar...

The twins also have a dresser with three drawers. All sleepers, onesies and socks are in there. Each child has their own drawer with the appropriate piles (socks are kept the drawer in a plastic shoebox bin so they don't end up all over the drawer). The remaining drawer has bibs, hats, the baby books and white unisex onesies.

The changing table also has three drawers -- the top is diapers and wipes, the middle drawer is towels and washclothes and burp cloths and the bottom drawer is sheets, sheet savers, pack'n'play sheets... I keep blankets/receiving blankets in a basket in the closet.

When they outgrow something I put it in a bag under one of the cribs, which helps tremendously in weeding out clothes easily.

Their room is small so when they are older I plan on getting beds with drawers underneath and bookcase headboards -- at least I hope too! Good luck!

I strive to be organized so I make sure to do the twins' laundry daily and put away so it doesn't add up.
