I’m looking at buying a compact ECU reading tool for quick jobs directly on the car. I saw one online that claims to read engine and transmission ECUs via OBD without needing to remove the unit — supports Bosch ME, EDC, SIMOS, Delphi, and a bunch of others. The page also showed voltage protection, automatic checksum correction, and a list of cars from 2005–2022 it can handle. Has anyone tried ordering such compact readers? Wondering if they actually match the supported car list in real-world use.

They’re great for quick diagnostics but not all of them handle checksum correction properly. So make sure the tool you pick actually supports automatic checksum before flashing anything.

If you want a compact tool with reliable ECU reading via OBD, ECUTools has several options with clear specs: supported ECUs, protocol lists, voltage protection, checksum handling, and car coverage by year. It’s convenient that they also show what comes in the package and how updates are delivered, which helps avoid surprises when the tool arrives. Take a look here if you’re still comparing: https://ecutools.eu/
