My parents frequent a lovely little beach nearby and I actually love it too though I don't go there much. With the nice weather coming my parents want to take the twins there.
Here's the problem: To get to the nice part of the beach you need a 4X4 with partially deflated tires to drive over the sand for about 1 mile. My dad has one but there's no place for carseats.
My parents have suggested driving to the beach with my car and then holding the twins in the back seat of the cab for the final mile which is over soft sand and going about 10 mph. My initial reaction was 'no way!' but then I thought about it and I would rather do that than walk the final mile over soft sand (not too easy) carrying 2 18 lb babies in the sun when we could ride in an air conditioned vehicle and get there in about 1/4 the time. Also, knowing my dad he'd drive extra slow if the babies were in the car.
So what are your opinions on this? Would you do it? Does anyone think it's reckless? One mile at no faster than 10 mph vs. a 20 minute sand-walk in the sun....

I'd do what you feel most comfortable doing. Dh and I recently took a trip to visit his grandmother and we were staying with his aunt and uncle who lived next door. They wanted us to ride in their car without the carseats. We did it but I was incredibly nervous the whole 2 minutes we were in the car and nothing happened. Just imagine yourself getting the car holding your babies and see how you feel. [IMG]

I would probably do it since you'll be going so slow and it's not like you'll be driving around other cars on a regular road.

I would do it without a doubt. Car seats are really needed nowadays because of other reckless drivers, high speeds, so much more time in the car, etc.- none of which we you encounter on your trek to your favorite beach! We live a couple of miles up some dirt roads...and I frequently hold one of the babies while my husband drives if htey are screaming like crazy. Sometimes, we allow our three year old to stand up front or sit in the sit with us. One of my favorite memories as a child is riding up on the top of my dad's scout truck when we would get to a dirt road- he went about 5 miles an hour, but with the wind blowing through your hair, it felt like 50!

I wouldn't have a problem doing it, as long as you could hold one, and someone else could hold the other in the back. It's not like you are going to run into too much traffic or anything!! How fun to go to the beach with the babies, wish there was one close to here!!!

    Have fun!!

I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't ride in the car for any distance without a seatbelt, and I wouldn't let my kid go unrestrained either.

    That's me.

I'd do it - I don't think you'll encounter too many tractor trailers on the beach

My thoughts as well. If it is like up here, you can hold a child as long as you are not on the road or interstate. Say you were driving around in a field, it would be okay. I would assume driving a mile on a beah, would be just fine! No real risk there. (Just my opinion).

I would do it too. Its just on the beach and there is no one else driving there. Just my opinion anyway. [IMG]

Thanks everyone! I feel better about it now. There would probably be a bigger chance of them getting hurt if I walked. I can't count how many times I've face-planted in the sand [IMG]
