One twin becoming less vocal/verbal?

I'm a little concerned about my Joel. Even though he was the first to coo and "talk" and string noises together, over the past couple of weeks he has pretty much stopped those behaviors all together. Now, the only sounds he seems to make are laughing and crying.

His brother also laughs and cries but still coos and "talks" at us.

At what point should I get worried? (knowing that I already am a bit)

And, is there anything i can do to get him "talking" again?

I would talk to your Ped if you are concerned. But I have to tell you at that age mine werent even cooing too much. As they got a bit older they took breaks from saying anything for a couple of weeks at a time and I remember feeling like you. But, they were probably just more focusing mastering to sit or cruise.

Been there! Done that! I worried too. Anthony was my talker. He would coo and babble all the time! Nicholas would just stare and take it all in. He's much more serious. Then, Anthony kinda stopped talking as much, and then Nicholas took over! I honestly wouldn't be too worried. Now-my Anthony LOVES to be noticed-and will shreik until he is heard and noticed!

With twins-it's just so hard NOT to compare the two of them!

I agree that it is so hard not to compare. While mine are older, I have one twin who is almost talking in phrases, and one who still does more grunting and pointing to communicate. But both are normal for their age. If you are worried about it, I second bringing it up at their next pedi. appointment just to be sure.

One thing I remember (from about the age yours are) is that mine got less verbal when they were trying to learn motor skills, like sitting up and crawling. Things kind of came in phases for us.

That happened with both of mine around that time. They started babbling then after a month or so, they kind of stopped. Or they would make one sound and do it for a while, and then not for a long time. They're back to babbling up a storm now, so I'm not worried. I agree -- babbling probably takes a backseat when they are focusing so hard on new motor skills......

They can only focus on/learn one thing at a time, the others are put on hold for a whild. I wouldn't worry they are still so young. Only in the last month do I have lots of babbling all day long. Before it was off and on and at certain times. I would not worry.

We had the exact situation. I've found that they "take turns" with things like that. One will be the mama's boy for a month or so, then they switch. One will be the "cranky" one then they switch. The same happened with the talking. Now just recently they both talk around the same amount and to each other which is super cute :D

OMG I couldve wrote this but replace Anthony with Sofia and Nicholas with Maia!! My mother used to say the 'Sofia show' because she would tell these great long stories now she laughs, shrieks and squeals. No stories! And Maia never shuts up now! She's SO funny! She'll "mamamamama" and then start laughing hysterically (and her laugh is pretty evil like her mommy's! :D )

I definitely wouldnt worry about it. I'm sure he'll be chatting again when he wants to.

I agree with pp's. If you are concerned talk to your pedi, but he's probably just focusing all his energy on another milestone. Its so easy to compare, and hard not to, but this might be nothing. GL!

thanks ladies. :) I am a big time worrier. They have both been working on (and succeeding at) rolling over, so maybe that's why he's quieted down. I just put him down on a brand new activity mat I bought for them and he is cooing at the toy animals. No coos for me, but the elephant rates a "guiiiiii ah!" ;)
