One of those little annoyances...

For some reason, I get a lot of people who have 2 children around a year apart tell me "my kids are so close, it's the same as having twins". The crazy thing is, these people just look at me and say that. I am very careful never to complain about 2 babies to anybody in public (mostly because it's not soooo bad- just certain crazy moments), they just volunteer that info. I shouldn't be annoyed by such a little thing, but, why say that? It's not the same.

OMG, it REALLY annoys me and my husband when people say this to us!!!!!!! Especially my husband b/c he helps me out a lot and we both know it is nowhere near as hard as having twins!!!! I don't ever know what to say to people when they say that!!

 

I find it annoying, too, but I never say anything. I just smile and nod.

 

I also HATE HATE HATE this! I never know what to say either and usually just nod as well. Finally this weekend a lady at church who's kids are grown and were 15 mos apart said that to me. I jokingly tried to point out the differences and she had some comeback for all of them saying, oh no it's just as hard.

 

This comment really annoys me too! I just smile and walk away!

 

I hate this too! People tell me this ALL the time and it makes me cringe! I just nod and say 'Yeah, heh.'
I've only met one person whose situation WAS the same as having twins. I met a lady this weekend who adopted 2 babies born a week apart. I said to her "YOU'VE had twins!!"

 

While I hate that comment too, I think we have to look in thier shoes a bit before we try taking a swing at them. Two babies born close together is nothing like twins and people should know that, but I think there are probably so many other difficulties that we don't think about. For example perhaps one is walking and getting into stuff while you are trying to feed and change the other. My sister and I were born 11 months apart and my mom said she nearly lost it a couple of times. My sister used to kick me out of my crib and I learned to roll quickly to get away from her.

I do hate the comment too b/c it is nothing like having twins, but in many ways it could be more difficult. I don't know.....Thank God. Two is enough for at least two more years.

 

My MIL tells me this every single time I see her, it drives me crazy!!

DH and his older brother are only 10 months apart, so she says it was just like having twins.

 

Having 2 babies born a year apart (or so) is hard, but it's a different kind of hard than having twins, that's for sure! I think they are trying to sympathise with you, but it just comes out sounding silly.

That being said, I hate that comment! My super-duper comeback is, "Why do you say that?" then they have to explain themselves, and then they realize that they sound foolish.
