I have been having trouble getting Luke to eat lately. He had a bout of tonsillitis/strep throat a few weeks ago & lost almost 3 pounds. His tonsils are still quite swollen, although not infected, and he still isn't eating hardly at all. The doctor said it can take weeks for them to return to normal, but if they stay swollen for a long period of time we will have to consider a tonsillectomy. Anyway, he's not eating, he hasn't gained back any of the weight he lost (although he hasn't lost anymore). I'm lucky if I can get him to eat a few (and I mean a few, 2 or 3) bites of his meals. The only thing he will consistently eat is yogurt, so at least there's that. He even turns down desserts & ice cream these days  . So, does anyone have any ideas for getting some weight back on my skinny boy?

We used to add Carnation Instant Breakfast to their milk to get them the extra calories they needed. Will he drink a milkshake? You could make one with ice cream and the CIB. Might be yummy and soothing on the throat.

ETA: Sorry, I just realized what forum this was in, but I think it would still work! :)

Funny you mentioned the Carnation Instant Breakfast, I just bought some at the store today & am going to give it a try. Adding it to shakes or smoothies sounds like a good idea!

I bet you could add it to the yogurt, too. I wish I had ideas for you. I hope the swelling goes down so he doesn't need the tonsillectomy!

CIB makes great smoothies. Put half a frozen banana and/or frozen berries in a blender. Add milk and CIB. Blend until the fruit is broken up. You can use whole milk or possibly half and half if you want to up the calories. Serve with a straw for added fun.

I was also going to suggest the CIB Tina. Justin had a tonsil/adnoidectomy when he was 4, so let me know if you need to go that route. Hopefully not!

Thanks guys, I guess I will just keep trying the CIB. He does seem to like it so at least that's something, I'm just getting so frustrated & worried about it, but at the same time trying not to make a big issue of it (we all know how that goes with 2 year olds). Where is that instruction book for raising kids when you need it?

Does he like avacados? They are soft and smooth and a great souce of healthy fat.

I don't know about your specific case, having to deal with weight loss, but I have one kid that likes avacados (which are always in season here) and one who doesn't. Guess which one is heavier? (The one who downs avacado slices at every meal)
