DD is crawling just fine and pulling up. DS is not. He tucks one leg underneath himself (for balance and security) and slides across the floor using his hands. He is NOT moving each leg coordinated with each hand. He moves two hands at once in one swift move and scoots his tush along teh floor with one foot underneath himself. We have been working with him daily at getting him on his hands and knees and helping him feel the rhythm of crawling.

Overall I am not too worried as he has routinely been 6-8 weeks behind his twin sister. However, this has been going on for just past 8 weeks so I am starting to worry a little. I will definitely bring it up to the dr. in a couple of weeks at our one year well baby appt. However, until that time, I would love to hear from other mommies who have any input....

    Thanks,
    Jenny

Some babies start out that way. I know my DD first started inching across the floor, then commando crawling, and then regular crawling. She started crawling regular about 6 weeks after she started her inching. DS just started crawling about 1.5 weeks after DD started crawling, he never did any of that other stuff. I have know other babies that would scoot around on their bottom to where they want to go. I would get him up on his hands and knees and show him what to do. I would mention it to you pedi. as you plan to do too. I'm sure he'll be crawling in no time.

Some babies never do the real crawling thing. I never did. Heres an article that talks about crawling and it mentions that since the whole SIDS campaign of back to sleep came in to play, it seems more and more babies are crawling later or never crawling at all

OMG! Same thing here, Maria is crawling and about to start walking and Sophia is doing the same scooting thing that you've describe and I'm happy about it because finally she got mobile. Her therapists are happy too, they say that this is a transitional step from just sitting, to crawling. And previous posters are right - not all babies are going even that far, some just skip this stage all together.

I wouldnt worry too much unless your pedi thinks theres a cause for concern. "milestones" are really just guidelines of what your baby may or may not being doing at any given time. Some babies never crawl at all, some do their own version crawling. Some babies may do all the milestones, others may only do a few things and some may be doing different things entirely.
A lot of babies go straight walking, and completely bypass crawling as well [IMG]

If you're really concerned I would maybe bring it up next time you see your pedi and see what they have to say about it..but I really dont think its a huge issue [IMG]

My girls don't crawl normally- never have and probably never will. THey butt scoot- it's cute but also quite annoying because the therapists were pushing for normal crawling week after week. My girls have found the convenience of just scooting- they don't have to get down to crawl and back up to play- they just remain in one spot- it's perfect for them- not great for encouraging walking either. I am trying not to worry here- as we aren't walking yet either but my girls are also 2 month behind in gross motor skills- I am TRYING to be patient but it is hard. I would bring it up at your pedi appt and see what your dr says. It can't hurt to express your concerns.

Thanks for the words of wisdom and encouragement. I try not to worry. Usually I have no time to worry! However, the more we work with him the more frustrated he gets. I, too, was so glad to see him scooting at first because he would be content to sit in the same spot until he fell over forwards, backwards, or sideways! So we have been so proud of him and he scoots so fast! He is funny because he is so timid and stiff. If you try to stand him up, his legs stay in the sitting position. I think he has just found what works for him and is comfy with it. When we get him on all fours to crawl he can do it with lots of help and encouragement, but he gets so tired. Maybe he just isn't ready. We'll just keep working with him and talk to the dr in two weeks.

    THANKS!

Mine are doing kind of the same thing. DD will crawl on her hands and knees and pull up on anything and everything. DS does this inch worm crawl on his tummy...he will get up on all 4s but when he wants to move he will drop back down to his tummy...

Also, he will stand and hold on to something if you stand him, but he is not pulling up by himself yet.

There is part of me that thinks I wouldn't think anything of it if he were a singleton and I didn't have his sister to compare...I guess I won't worry about it unless it doesn't seem to progress in the next few months...
