So today I had my reagular growth ultrasound and internal cervix ultrasound and the babies look great. Baby A is 3lbs 1 oz measuring a week ahead and Baby B the girl is measuring 3lbs 12oz shes in the 97% tile and is measuring at 32 weeks!! I'm 28 weeks 4 days today. My cervix on the other hand is measuring 2cm which is short so now I'm on bed rest. The doctor wants to do a cervical cerclage on me Tuesdsay, were they stitch your cervix shut. What is everyones views on this? and getting this done so late? Then she said they would cut it at 35 weeks, but she wants me to try to make it to 35 weeks. It may work, it may not! I'm scared to get that done and its up to me, if I don't then modified bed rest. I have my baby shower the end of this month and I have a six year old son and this really sucks. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would get a second opinion. Are you seeing an OB or a peri? Is your cervix 2 cm dilated or do you have 2 cm of cervix in length? Cerlages are risky, especially done later in pregnancy. I've honestly never heard of one being done as late as 28 weeks. Are you in active labor? Sorry for all the questions! I will tell you all I know in case it helps you. Studies have shown that bedrest can be as effective as a cerclage if held to strictly. Also bedrest doesn't have the risks a cerclage does. A cerclage, especially this late in pregnancy, brings a risk of pre-term labor, premature rupture of membranes and introduction of infection. You can read my full story on the bedrest success stories sticky, but here's the short version. I went into PTL at 20 weeks, didn't realize it, and was found to be 3 cm dilated at a routine appt. I was giving birth right then and had an almost zero percent chance of making it further. My peri could see DD's bag of waters bulging through the cervix. I begged him to do something and he agree to try a cerclage as it was my only hope of making it to viability. He warned me how little of a chance I had to make it. I did make it and delivered my twins at 31wks5dys. If I were to go through another pregnancy, even with my history, I would not necessarily have a cerclage done. They are THAT risky. I would prefer trying bedrest first and seeing how far I could make it. If I were you, in your position, I would find someone to help me with my DS and I would follow a strict bedrest routine. If you can be strict at home, you can avoid the hospital (I spent 11wks on hospital bedrest) which is no fun at all. The longer you make it, the better your babies will do. They say that every day inside you equals two days in the NICU. And the NICU is not a rollercoaster I would wish on anyone. I hope my ramblings have helped you and not scared you to death! Please keep us posted, we are here to encourage you!!!

Wow! I have no experience with a cerclage, but have been on bedrest. I would really think about the cerclage- I also had issues with my cervix. My dr wouldn't even entertain the idea of a cerclage on me past 26 weeks. You need to do what you feel is best. Hugs to you!!! Take care!!!!

I dont know about doing that so late in pregnancy. I too am miserable on bed rest at 25 weeks and want to go back to work. Try and see about getting another opinion....I know that it is hard and your "reg" doctor might get upset but you need to take care of those babies the best that you know how.

I'm seeing an OB and a peri, of course my OB recommended it! I'm going to take your advice and not get it done and I talked to the peri and she said she thinks I'm to far along to get that done. So I go tomorrow for another swab of my cervix. They said my cervix is 2cm meaning short I guess, I dont think I'm dialated at all so I guess thats a good thing. They said no intercourse and to take everything easy. On top of all that I'm high risk as it is with diabetes and high blood pressure. I'm just really nervous about everything. I love hearing your success story that is awesome, I guess I'm glad in a way that I made it over a hurdle being 29 weeks this coming Monday, so I know their chances of survival would be good each day their in my womb. I dont want to be on hospital bed rest at all, do you know the chances of how far someone would go in my position with my cervix the way it is?

Okay, with the info you provided it means your cervix is getting shorter. OB's usually like 3.5 cm in length. You are at 2cm, but not effaced. Thats good news. No dialation is good nesws as well.
I'm also on bedrest and a nurse, so I really could not cont to work. I see it as house arrest cause I do get up every few hours and do little chores. I sit on a chair to load dishwasher and sort laundry. If I contract right back to bed lay on left side, take medicine regularly.

    Hang in there :0
