So, I went to the doctor for my regular weekly visit on Sept 5th. All was well, ultrasound measurements on the babies were 5 pounds 7 or 8 ounces for my son and a couple ounces less for my daughter. The OB visit was basically signing paperwork for my c-section and tubal scheduled for the20th. We firmed up plans and even set a time. Before we left my OB joked - you never know - your water could break tonight.
Well, 1:40 in the morning my toddler woke up and called for dh. I opened my eyes and thought - I don't feel right. As soon as I had that thought I jumped up to my water breaking - yeah for saving the bedsheets!!!
We called my OB who luckily was on call and headed for the hospital. I got there at 2:15 and they confirmed my son's water had broken. They did an ultrasounds and both babies were breech - so they started giving me fluids to get ready for the section.
The s cetion wasn't bad at all. The staff said I was the calmest section they had ever done as we joked back and forth throughout the entire thing. That is a blessing because you guys know how I felt about having a section. The only bad part was during the tubal - my uterus on my chest made me feel like I was having a heart attack, but it didn't take long.
My son started crying before he was even pulled all the way out. My daughter had a little respitory distress because of fluid. She was taken to the NICU and my son got to stay with dh.
My daughter in NICU was the hardest part because she fell into the "NICU trap" - meaning her issues subsided within 12 hours, but she was already in the system and had to pass a ton of "test" before she could get discharged. It basically went like this - her distress was because of fluid, but they always assume it could be an infection - so they started her on antibiotics. It takes at least 48 hours for results to come back confirming she did NOT have an infection. They tube feed while giving antibiotics and won't start regular feeding until the line comes out. They wanted to observe her doing regular feeding for 48 hours as well. Due to a shift change, we had a 12 hour delay in starting regular feedings. So, she ended up in NICU for 5 days! One day I got so angry and God dealt with me. While I was nursing my perfectly healthy daughter He told me to look around. She was the only healthy baby in NICU. He asked me would I rather have a healthy baby in NICU or trade places with the other parents that surrounded me. I got over my anger quickly. Especially since I was able to nurse her or supply breastmilk when we got discharged the day before.
Healing from the section wasn't too bad at all. I took the advice of walking early, not drinking from straw, and trying to get the bowels moving quickly.
Even though my babies were only 35 weeks exactly - they were both able to latch on and nurse successfully with the first attempt! They have been going strong ever since. At their one week appointment they have both gained from their initial birth weight (ds was 5 pounds 3 ounces, dd was 5 pounds 6 ounces).
We are all doing great and big brother likes them both a lot!

Each child has their own page - so just click on their name. My toddler has the main page (privliges of the first born!).

Hang in there everyone - I know it can get hard. I do feel very blessed - I didn't know how much longer I could hang in there and I know not all 35 weekers are at healthy as mine. Stay the course and know that it really is worth it in the end!
