Last night was really the last straw - everyone was mad at everyone - poor sleep (I think I had maybe 2hours?).

    So CIO it is tonight.

I am having a beer right now.

Good luck - I suggest finding something to do while you are in "waiting to go in" mode. It is hard to listen to them cry and helps if you can be on the computer or something.

Also - in the middle of the night when they wake don't forget to wait 5 minutes or so before you go in. You'll want to go in so the other doesn't wake up but don't. They will learn to sleep through each others cries.

GOOD LUCK!!! I hope you get lots of sleep tonight!

    Hi Melissa,

Just wanted to wish you luck. CIO saved my life and probably my kids' too (ha-ha). It may take a week or so and you will have some bad evenings even after they know the drill. Just follow through. Remember they will be fine as long as they are fed, dry, and safe.

Good luck! Been there and probably going to do it within the next couple of days with my oldest child. Just ordered a white noise machine for my twins' room so they will hopefully sleep through it! It's horrible for a couple of nights, but it always works until my DD gets out of whack again.

Thanks everyone. We are basically sitting here waiting.... weird.

Actually so far it has been strangely quiet - they both skipped their first wake-up that happens 1/2 hour after they go to sleep.

Of course now that I have stated that I am waiting for all **** to break loose. Typically the bad time is 11 to 3.

I should say that there could have been some small wakeups, but I put a CD of ocean waves on in their room for white noise and cranked it up louder than usual and I have the baby monitor turned down REALLY low.

Good luck Simone!! It worked well for me last night (first time I tried) and now listening to Ashley not wanting to nap. 5 more minutes to go before checking on her!

Hope it went well and remember, it will only get better. We're training as well ... results are still mixed, but we have different issues (early wake up time).

    Let us know!

Good luck to you! It worked for us! Last night, after 2 nights of CIO, our DS slept from 7pm to 7am!!! He didn't even wake up for his midnight bottle! This morning he ate 8oz (used to only take 6 in the morning) and is giggling and playing with his sister right now.

Well it went much better than I thought it would!

Oddly, my more patient twin was the one who was waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy more mad from 11pm to midnight. Then there was another wakeup around 5 this morning. DH went in at 7 this morning (they were both fussing a little) and as soon as they saw him they were all smiles.

They also for the first time ever drank their whole 7oz bottles this morning.

I think the fact that we were both so incredibley sleep deprived made it easier for us to tolerate the crying (it was still hard).

    So the experiment continues!

I remember when mine drank more of their morning bottle after doing CIO. It was so nice to see them actaully ready for that bottle!

Well, did it during naps today too - the crying went on for 1/2 hour so that was a little less than last night.

I am about to get ready for bed, which means that they will wake up any second (they sense that I am tired I swear).

I'll let you know how it goes tonight.

    Thanks!

I think we will be doing it tonight...I too will be having an adult beverage of some sort to calm my nerves :)

Good luck LB. I do reccomend something to calm the nerves! It is hard - the only thing I can say for night CIO vs. naptime CIO is that at least at night I can't see their faces quite so clearly so I can't see the anger/unhappiness that will then haunt me. Don't get me wrong, I hear it, but oy the look in their eyes is hard to handle!!

Really having waited until I was so sleep deprived I was at the vvvveeeerrrrryyyy end of my rope in some ways helped - I felt a little more hardened.

I hope it continues to go well! For us, it took 10 nights for Emma, nights 5 and 6 were the worst but it has been won-der-ful ever since. :drinks: I'll have one with you!!

Well, we sort of cheated the first 2 nights - we initially put them down super drowsy, just seconds away from dropping off. It was the middle of the night wake ups which we applied CIO to.

However, tonight we are trying CIO with going down. Um, somehow much harder. :( Maybe because I am not half asleep so I feel it all more?

I will be so glad when this has settled down!!!!! DH goes out of town for a week next week and I am really hoping I am not facing this alone (although facing the constant getting up to try and settle them alone was no fun either last time he went out of town).

I think I drink more since I had babies than I did before (which is not to excess, don't get me wrong, but more often, like nightly right now).

I'm there with you Melissa, we're seperated by 8000 miles but both trying to achieve the same thing! I agree that when you are so sleep deprived, its worth it.

When I look back at the last few weeks - I've been a miserable sleepy mum who didn't really communicate much with the girls and was very snappy with my DH. This week - I"M like a new mum plus Ashley actually seems happier!

Keep up the good work Melissa!

    Hi Ladies,

Melissa , Hope it gets better.

I'm in the same boat as you. Our girls are 7 month. We put them to bed around 7:30, 8 but then they wake up after an hr or so...that 1st hr is a deep sleep. I have to go & sooth them or give them a paci, then they fall back to sleep this contiues ftill about 12. Why do they keep waking up. They're sleepy but still wake up & cry! I have to feed them at 12 or 12:30 & fall back to sleep till 5am. If I feed them at 5 then they will not have breakfast later! I'm not sure how to adust this sched! Any suggestions pls??

    Thanks
    Hina

We have also done CIO. We started about 3 weeks ago, and they don't wake until 4 am for a soother. I guess we have to work on that now, they are more or less awake from 4 am on. So I guess we have to do it again.!!

Sometimes a white wine spritzer after the babies go to bed is the only thing that cheers me up after a hard day! Don't worry!

Why do they keep waking up. They're sleepy but still wake up & cry!

From what I have read it seems to be a combination of two things: the first waking up happens at the end of their first sleep cycle (they have shorter sleep cycles than adults do), the late night waking is due to them having their deepest sleep at the beginning and the end of night. We wake up from sleep cycles, but we don't remember it as we know how to roll over or whatever it takes to get comfy and we don't fully wake up. Babies don't know how to do this, so they are awake, but don't want to be awake.

This helped me at least understand what is going on with the boys. They have to learn to soothe themselves back to sleep. It at least makes me feel like the CIO is a good thing for them in the long run - they will need that skill.

However, it doesn't make listening to the crying any easier :(

Good luck to all my fellow CIOers!
