So my 13 year old daughter has a **** zu dog that we have had forever and with the twins coming I thought getting this 3lb pug puppy for my 4 year old son would be a great idea so he can have something of his own...DH says I am crazy but I just can't help myself :D

Hey, if you feel up to it.....that's great! I can't imagine adding a dog to this crazy house! (But we are not "dog people", we just visit my brother's dog) I'm sure he would love it, but it's going to be all you doing the work.......and taking care of two babies....a preschooler.....and a teenager.....maybe you already are  . ;)

I am a HUGE dog lover!!! I have an english bulldog and I adore her! She's my baby too :). But remember,
if you get a puppy, they pee and #$#@ all the time  !! And don't forget the chewing! But that breed is
so little.. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to take care of. I know what you mean though, I don't think your
crazy...he he... I guess because I'm an animal lover. Maybe this will teach your 4 yr old about responsibility?

Oh my goodness... it was all I could do to take care of twins... having a four year old (and a 13 year old) would be hard enough... but a puppy? You must be wonder woman!

Speaking from a slightly similar experience....and I'm a huge dog person...

Don't do it!!!

We had just agreed to get a 4 mo old lab puppy when I found out I was pregnant, we already had a 1 year old golden retriever and it's been crazy! The boys are good, but definitely work and they don't get nearly the attention or exercise they deserve! Poor Zeke (the lab) took forever to housebreak (some medical issues, but he's good now) but he's got ENERGY! And I didn't have the resouces or the energy to take him to as many training classes as I did the golden, so he's only got a little training on top of all that energy.

And I don't even have any older kiddos to factor in! As much as I love Zeke, looking back, that 20/20 hindsight thing...I don't know that we should have gotten him when we did. But he's our buddy and we're doing the best we can.

Plus, at 4, I don't think most kiddos are ready to truly be responsible for an animal. They can 'help' but 99.9% of the work is going to fall on your shoulders!

Good luck what ever you decide to do!

Oh, what about maybe a guinea pig or a rabbit? I had a guinea pig through out college ^_^ (she was my buddy!) and then got a pair that just recently left us for a better place. Guinea pigs make great pets for little ones. They're generally gentle, don't require a lot of exercise and aren't difficult to care for properly. Plus they're just really cute! As soon as my girls are a little older, I see us getting some again!

DON'T DO IT! Or at least that is my vote. I have a 7 year old Jack Russell Terrier (wild, wild dog), and a 6 year old Rat Terrier. Before the babies came along these animals where mine and DH's babies. They were so spoiled. Within a week of coming home from the hospital, I wanted them gone. It was just too much trying to deal with them and the babies, and also I felt guilty because they don't get near the attention now that they used to. I feel kind of sorry for them.

My vote is, NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!

I am a huge dog person and dont think it sounds like the right reason to get a dog. If your son was 13 it maybe a little more logical but even then...

I do not think it would be fair to the animal.

I love dogs too and I say NO WAY!!!!!
It is so hard having newborn twins and I think it is even harder during the last weeks of pregnancy. You will not be able to take proper care of your family, never mind with a new puppy. we got a pup when I was about 4 months and although he is an outside farm dog (australian shepherd) He just didn't geT the training our last one got at the young age. Why don't you try to get your son really involved in the pregnancy ( ultrasounds , shopping for the babies etc. ) I did this with my DD who was NOT excited about the babies and it really turned her attitude around. Then when they are born he won't feel so left out but will be a big helper and feel more involved. I understand that maybe you are the one who would like the little puppy, but I think you would regret it at this point. Good luck in whatever choice you make!

I love animals, our dog is our baby and I would not trade her for the world, but at this stage I think it would be way too stressful. A four year old really doesn't understand the responsibility of having a dog. Maybe you could get a fish or something relatively benign. At first I thought to suggest a cat, but that may be too much as well. Give yourself some time to think it through and if after the twins are born, you and your DH think you can handle it, it might be a good idea. Remember emotions are running rampant right now, it really isn't the best time to make big decisions.

Well being the logical person I am here is a picture on my son getting Miss Molly . She really is a sweet girl and adjusted very well last night, she is almost all the way Potty Broke and my son took her out last night and this morning before school. She has latched on to DH big time so I think they will be sharing her. http://s142.photobucket.com/albums/r82/bbr...ndmissmolly.jpg :umm:

I am not a dog person (I am a cat person), but I don't think it is a good idea to get a cat now either...I vote no too.

My vote would be no as well, and I am a huge animal lover. I have 13 pets in my house... yes 13. 6 cats, 2 dogs, 1 rabbit, 1 lizard, 1 python and 2 boa constrictors. AND a 12 year old son. And DH and twins on the way. I know that we ended up with so many pets because after 9 years of TTC, we had a baby sized hole in our lives that we tried to fill with pets. I love all my animals, but they are work. Even with a DH and DS to help, having pets makes more mess to clean up, that takes more time, which is something I expect to be lacking in very soon. I'm actually looking at re-homing some of my snakes, because of the care required for them. Pets are great to have around, they are our furry children, but I know that for me, in the grand scheme of things, my priorities SHOULD be : children, DH and I, pets, but knowing me would be : chldren, pets, DH and I. I'm not super woman.

Just my 2 cents

I hope it all works out for you. Sounds like your son is enjoying his puppy. Hope your hubby doesn't mind the extra work, I am just afraid that your son will loose interest quickly and it's going to end up being left on your list of chores. Not going to be easy with new twins! Good luck though. I know I love my puppy, and I was thinking about getting another one for a companion, but I decided that 1 is enough until the twins get older. Once they are ready to enjoy a puppy, too. Not only that, but I am concerned about my puppy adjusting to not only 2 new people in the house soon, but another dog? He may not look at it the same way I would! I am glad though that your son is enjoying his puppy!

Ok, I'm a HUGE dog person and I say don't do it. A 13 year old can at least take care of the dog, but a 4-year old is not. It might be cool at first, but he will grow tired of doing stuff you need to do for a dog/puppy. A dog is too much responsibility for a child that age! What happens next year when he goes to school? Good luck with your decision!

eta: I see you got a puppy. Good luck!

Good-luck with the puppy! Sounds like everyone responded not to get a puppy. I can understand the work,
but I just adore my english bulldog soooo much! BUT, she is lazy and is almost 5. So she's disciplined and
house broken. Either way, have fun with the little puppy! I'm sure your 4 yr old is a happy camper!!

So far we have had no problems at all, she has had a few minor accidents but nothing like I thought. She is actually 8 months old so she is still puppyish but knows the ropes! It was well worth my son's face :D
