You are all going to be sick of my posts today! But I've been meaning to ask these questions...

OK-Both boys are now 5 months old. And swaddled. I'm beginning to think they are going to college in their blue/green Kiddopatumus swaddle me blankets. :p No lie. How in the world are they going to sleep with out them? We want to stop them because generally speaking we go in at night and someone has a hand up in their face and they are sucking away at what little they can get in their mouth! They just wiggle those arms up no matter how tight the blanket is!

So-when they are not swaddled-they sleep...oh....maybe 10 minutes! Then they startle themselves awake. I love how cute they look sleeping without a swaddle, but not sure if they will ever sleep without it!

We have not done CIO yet. For the most part they go down pretty well(I know I know...not wide awake unfortunately). They wake about once a night and go back down. I was waiting on the CIO for the 6 month mark...

Also-dh is going away for a week to Las Vegas( )-beginning of May(boys will be 6.5 months old) and I will be here alone with the boys. We were hoping they would be on a set schedule with naps and sttn for the most part-but I'm wondering if that's a figment of my imagination?!?!?!

I halfway weaned my girls from the swaddle last month. I freed one arm on Fri, then the following Fri I freed the other arm.... Thats as far as I got. :huh

    Good luck!

totally off subject... your's slept in the carseats for a while, right? did you get them into cribs? just asking, cuz we had ours in the bouncies/swings FOREVER till they were 4 months old. and we put our's down half asleep or asleep.

sorry that was totally off topic. i have no advice for you! we stopped swaddling after week 2. they were freeing themselves that early on! (these girls fall for nothing)

Good memory! Yes they did-thanks to dh! They have been in their cribs since they were 4 months old. Glad that is done. I should say they are in their crib at NIGHT. They still nap, swaddled of course, in their swing. I just can't deal with a 20 minute nap in the crib. Some day's I think they are done with the swing when they wake up after 15-20 minutes.

Like I said though-we haven't done CIO. I don't think I could do CIO alone at nap time. I wouldn't be able to do it. DH works a lot because of tax season. I think we are going to eventually not leave the house for a month until we can get these boys on track.

So-your girls go to sleep no problem without the swaddle? Do they wake themselves up?

We stopped when they were almost 4 mo old. We'd start with one or both arms out. Did that for a week or two. Then we put them in sleep sacks so they were still in something but had their arms free. They didn't like being completely free yet. They did well with that and we still put them in sacks most of the time unless it's really warm in their room. When we first made a change they would have a bit more trouble falling or staying asleep but it passed in a day or two. They are doing well and STTN every night.

    Good luck!

why do you want to ween them from swaddling if they sleep well that way? we still swaddle at 6 months. Our Pedi said it was fine to do it for as long as they seem to need it - she said one of her daughters was swaddled until 9 months old.

If you believe the book the Happiest Child on the Block then kids need the 4th trimester and the swaddle is part of that....so he says hurray for the swaddle and keep it going as long as kids need/benefit it and sleep well....a child who sleeps well is a happy child. I was just learning how to do his technique of swaddle for my 7 wk olds and thought how funny - something else to worry about - weaning from swaddling....always something new to learn on this site...

    thanks

We actually swaddled until they were 6 months old. we used the MB -- and we had tried once to "wean" them -- and it just didn't work. At about 5.5 months they started (all the sudden) to break out of the swaddle EVERY night -- but at the same time started STTN. So since they were able to go back to sleep after they broke themselves out, I figured they didn't need them anymore. So after 2 weeks of STTN (so they were 6 months old) - we cold turkey'd it -- and switched to sleep sacks (for warmth) -- we had one 15 min crying jag the first night -- but ever since it's be great -- still STTN, and no swaddle.

Honestly, unless you feel strongly about it -- I don't see the need to get red of the swaddling until they are ready (I still swaddle arms for naps -- but mostly b/c they still cry 10 min or so for naps if I don't swaddle, and given that they only take 30 min naps...i can't stand to hear them cry for 10, sleep for 30 - 5 times a day)

yeah, mine are still taking their "naps" (if that's what you wanna call it when it lasts a whole 20 minutes! ) in their bouncers. there's no point in me moving them from bouncer (where tehy fall asleep after i feed them) to crib when they're just going to wake up shortly, anyway. we haven't done CIO, either. i guess i'm kind of hoping things will just sort of fall right into place on their own

as for my girls waking themselves up... they are all over the place in their cribs, and they have woken up and whined until one of us go in there and adjust them. they usually will fall right back to sleep. USUALLY. a few weeks ago, marina kept waking up because she kept flipping over on her tummy. that was a rough week! now, if she flips over on her tummy, she stays there, asleep. and my girls mostly sleep on their sides. at firsti tried to move them back onto their backs, but i gave up. if that's how their comfortable, then why risk waking them?

We went cold turkey with the swaddle at the same time that we did CIO (at about 5 months). Our reasoning was that we couldn't do CIO with the swaddle, because while they were crying, they'd thrash themselves out of the swaddle. And we were really ready to do CIO, because it was taking longer and longer (up to 45 minutes) to rock the girls to sleep so they'd stay asleep and not wake up the second they hit the crib.

So we just put them down awake and unswaddled for the very first time. They cried for a long time (over an hour, at least Amy did) but then fell asleep and pretty much slept until the next feeding. The first few days of being unswaddled, Amy did wake up a couple of extra times and fussed a little, but then went back to sleep on her own.

On the whole, it was a much easier transition than I expected, but that may have been because CIO was such a big transition that the swaddling thing just seemed insignificant. Anyway, after those first few days it was like they'd never been swaddled at all -- they didn't seem to miss it a bit.

We had a similar transition. It definitely went more smoothly but we were also doing CIO (well at least with Kevin, because Pat slept pretty well). Good luck Meg!

They seem to be getting themselves free from it on most nights. I have no problem with them being swaddled-they sleep! But I think it's what is waking them up in the middle of the night. Whereas they could sleep through(they have....before), but once those hands get up near their mouth-it's over!

So I think I will keep swaddling. I don't think the 6 month mark is going to be pleasant at my house! Maybe we'll try CIO and unswaddling if need be. I just may need to go away for the weekend... :winking0009:

What we did was sew the arm holes the sleep sacks shut and put them in those for about 2 weeks (so arms still held in but pretty loose) then unsewed the arm holes and let their arms go free. It was less sleeping for about 1 week but then back to "normal" but never as good as with the swaddle (until CIO).

    HTH :)
