One of my DDs started exclaiming "Oh my goodness!" a few weeks ago. This phrase is said around them by various family members and I am ok with it. Starting yesterday, she has changed to "OMG!" I don't know where she's picked this up as we are careful with our language around them. Anyhow, I'd prefer she didn't say this.

My question is this - what is the best way to get her to stop saying this? Should we just ignore the phrase and hope it goes away or should we correct her when she says it? Any advice?

I'm interested to see the responses to your question since my ds has started saying "God ******" alot and we've been ignoring him but it doesn't seem to be working very well.

For stuff like that - we say "those are adult words" you may say "xyz, but not that!" If they persist, I count it and timeout follows if they insist on continuing!!

One Thanksgiving Martin was upstairs yelling "G0d D****it!" I was like - did he just say that? And he kept going. (I was downstairs and had time to stifle the laughter before I got to him!) But since then we did a few other interventions and told him those are adult words and I don't want to hear them from them....

It's pretty normal, but it makes you feel really lousy about your skillZ.

It's always a tough call. I've always found if they don't get a reaction they will stop saying it, so I tend to try ignoring it first. If that doesn't work, I will try telling them those are not nice words & then if it still doesn't work I do timeouts.

I was quite a bit older (like middle school) but when my mom didnt like a catch phrase I was saying she would follow me around the house saying it non-stop. Every chance she got. It drove me nuts. I dropped it quickly. :) Not helpful for you, but I had to share!

I've caught my little one saying it a few times and I just say, "no, no, let's say oh, my goodness" I don't make a big deal out of it because I don't want them saying it just to ruffle my feathers. Once I've corrected them, they've repeated it the right way and went on about their business. I just make sure to correct them everytime I hear it wrong, which thank goodness has not been that often.

I've told my kids "we don't use that language around here" (after I've stopped giggling)...my mom just ignores it...

My son has come up with quite the doosies lately. We tried ignoring it at first, but he just kept saying it. When he says "OMG" we tell him that it hurts God's feelings when we say that, and then we chant "Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh my goodness." in a silly way and tell him to say that instead. He has also been saying "Oh D*****" and we tell him that isn't nice, and he will correct himself with "Oh man!" There have been a few times that he pushed the issue, and then we did time out. Now he will try to go through all the words he can't say, and the ones he can say instead. It cracks me up, since I'm pretty sure he's just making sure he can still use his naughty words.
