Ok, so my girls are 2 years old (26 months) and lately will have crying attacks that won't end. My one DD will usually just start crying hysterically especially if I can't do whatever she asks right then and there. She will follow me around the house crying for me to pick her up and carry her everywhere. By this time, my other DD starts up just because she sees her sister carrying on and on. I can not get her to calm down even then if I pick her up. Do I put her in the "naughty chair" but shes not really being bad. I try using a calm voice and tell her its ok and that I love her but she usually gets so worked up she forgets why shes crying and can't stop. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?? PLEASE HELP.

    Thanks,
    Jen

My girls are older, but even at that age we told them that it was ok to cry, but they had to go cry in their room and they could come out when they were done crying. We still do this. They are never in trouble and it's not said meanly or with anger. If they don't go to their room we walk them there. Jo walks to her room and cries there for a few more minutes then comes out happy again, and still does at 4. Ellie, 3, needs to be taken to her room and on the way she'll be crying, "I'm done crying, I'm done," and will finish within seconds of my leaving her.

Going to their room to cry is not a punishment, it's so we don't have to listen to the out of proportion reaction to whatever. Once they realize we aren't interested and they don't have an audience, they stop crying soon and come out.

Maybe this will work for you!

That is spectacular advice!! I was going to say "fit carpet" - it's not time out, it's a place to go cry until they are done - they choose when to come out. I am not sure they would understand completely at 26 mos., but catch on quickly!!

We do something similar to what Jen mentioned, but we have them sit on the couch. As Jen said, it's not a punishment or said in a mean voice. I tell them to sit on the couch until they are done crying and then they can come and join us when they are done. Once they climb down and say they are done, they always want to snuggle.
