We got pregnate with our twins while on birth control [IMG] We have a beautiful set of faternal b/g twins. we are thinking that we want at lease one more baby befor we are done, so i was wondering how many people who had a spontanious set of twins ended up with a second set of spontanious twins.
I would def be up for having another set, we already have two of everything [IMG] [IMG]

I think that I've heard somewhere that once you have a set, your chances for another quadruple. Plus, if you're older, your chances are higher. Also, with more pregnancies your chances increase. We are planning on more, too. Twins are a lot of work, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

We have spontaneous identicals. It's my understanding that the same odds that apply to fraternal twinning don't apply to Ids. Anyone know more about this? My grandmother was a fraternal twin though, so it makes me wonder...

We had always planned on two kids, but I could see having one more (two more would be kinda pushing it for us [IMG]. Would love to know if anyone has information about the odds of conceiving another set after spontaneous IDs.

Sorry! Realize this does not in any way answer YOUR question [IMG].

I think the odds of having a repeat set of fraternal twins id 1 in 5, or a 20% chance with each subsequent pregnancy. HTH.

Since ID twins are spontaneous, the odds of you conceiving a second set of ID twins is 1 in 250, which is the same as the odds you had to conceive your first set. I hope this makes sense, HTH!

My last pg were twins (I m/c'd one twin) as a result of clomid - I thought! I asked my doctor about our chances of another set using clomid again and he did say they went up. So we didn't use any fertility drugs and here I am 36 weeks pg with twins. I have no idea were all these twins came from, we have absolutely no multiples in our families. I have also heard the chances of multiples increases with age, number of pgs, and past multiple pgs.

That's what I've heard too - but I also heard that it can be more likely to have twins after ID twins - just because your body has already had two - it is fooled into thinking that that's what it is supposed to do??? Anyone else heard this?

Interesting! My first pg was ID twins (lost to TTTS). I was told I had no more of a chance of spont twins again as any other woman. Now I have frat twins from IVF. I was told now I have a better chance of spont frat twins due to my age - OLD [IMG] But man ooh man, many of you with 2 sets of twins really throw all the explanations for chances off the charts [IMG]

I've read something similar to that -- some scientists think that many more sets of twins are conceived than born or even known about because the mother's body sees a twin pregnancy as abnormal and either miscarries both or reabsorbs one (vanishing twin syndrome). The theory then is that the body of a mom who has had a successful twin pregnancy recognizes twins as normal, and will be more likely to retain (that's not quite the word I want) a twin pregnancy. I don't think that this tendency has a huge impact of the likelihood of repeat twins after IDs, though.

My doc told me I had a 1 in 50 chance. Is it actually higher then that?

I heard its a 50/50 shot. When the time is right, I'll be eating a ton of yams and go on b/c for a few months to try for a second set.

We get this question asked a lot. There are many factors to consider, but to put an average number out there, I would say that any woman who spontaneously gives birth to fraternal twins has a 1 in 15 to 20 chance of having fraternal twins again in a subsequent pregnancy (four times greater chance than natural odds).

The odds of having identical twins would be the same standard 1 in 250 chance; I've never read anything concrete on the chance that you'd be more likely to have fraternal twins increases. Perhaps you'd be less susceptible to a vanishing twin, but even that would be difficult to substantiate. We think our 17-month-old started out as a twin due to an empty second sac at his first ultrasound.

After 3 boys, I want a girl. However, DH (not me) is scared to death that we'll end up with triplet boys if we try for a girl. Doctors guestimate that 1 out of every 6 pregnancies is a twin pregnancy, but that not all of them make it past the 12 week pt. Given that our bodies think its normal to have 2 at once, I think there's a good shot at having another set. I keep telling my DH that we've done it once, we can do it again. [IMG]

Do yams increases your chances of conceiving twins???

I'd LOVE to have another set with my next pregnancy! They are such a blessing!

I *think* that yams increase your fertility.... and just a little tidbit --- more spontaneous twins are conceived in July. (That's what I heard anyway!)
