Obsessed with shoes

Sarah hasn't yet actually demanded to sleep with her shoes on, but I have a feeling the day isn't far off.... They wear footie PJs (we keep it chilly in the house at night), plus sleep sacks. But as soon as we take the sleep sacks off in the morning, we have to put her shoes on OVER her PJ feet before she will eat breakfast. (Fortunately her favorite shoes are Teva sandals, so this is actually possible.) She also has to wear her Tevas with her PJs for story time at night.

So far, she is letting us take her shoes off to put the sleep sack on, but this could change any day! Would you let her go to bed with her shoes on? I can't actually see anything harmful about it (other than that it's just icky).

She is also insistent that other people wear their shoes. If anyone is barefoot, she'll get their shoes from the front hall and fling them at that person's feet and whine until they put them on. It's like it's really distressing to her.

Anyone have any good shoe-obsession stories to share -- or is my child just really weird? :D

ETA: In the thread title, I meant to say "let a 19-month-old," not "like a 19-month-old" -- I can't figure out how to change it...

I had to laugh at this (sorry I know it's not funny)! But Ella just went through this obsession about a month ago. We got a cute pair of summer slip on sandals and I made a big deal about them and how pretty they were (because she had been petrified of a pair of flip flops I had for her!) She would not take them off. We never got to the point of wearing them to bed. (We'd have to tell her over and over again to just kiss them goodnight and she'd see them in the AM) But she'd to the same thing. Before we'd even eat breakfast, she'd need them on! How crazy! I fear these girls are gonna be the picky dressers down the road! Help us! Oh, to answer your question, I wouldn't let her wear them to bed. Like you said, it's "icky"

Yes, Bea is obsessed with her Crocs, and she gets upset when I take mine off. She brings them to me and even tries to put them on my feet! She has come close to wearing hers to bed, but I convinced her to take them off.

Mine have worn their shoes to bed many times (nap time too). They are in love with shoes, all shoes and want to wear shoes all the time. If they do go to bed with out shoe, that is the first thing they are calling for when they wake up. I really don't think it is a huge deal that the shoes sometimes are worn to bed, because I really don't want to deal with a fight at the end of the day.

I changed the title for you Alden. :) You can only edit your post for 30 min. after you post I believe if you are not a rewards member, I think they have 1 hour. But a mod can do it anytime for you, just ask. :) Also if you are within the time limit, try doing full edit and not quick edit, that probably would have given you the title back.

No words of advice, just wanted to say I got a chuckle out of Sarah doing this. I can just picture her with her shoes over her footed pj's.

Oh yes - it's a stage. And one - I hate to say - that at age 2 1/2 is still somewhat going on in our house. Archer and his dang Lady Bug boots that he wants to wear every day! aaagh! Anyway - if you do not want her wearing shoes to bed, stress kissing them good night and putting them to bed in her closet. Maybe show her how yours and daddy's are all asleep, or napping, in your closet.

The sleep/napping line has saved me a million headaches. "You can't play on the tractor, it's sleeping right now" etc; I really don't know what I am going to do when they figure it out!

    Good luck!!!

P.S> I know an Alden in Boulder. Very strange coincidence. Is that your first name? I know you are not her as she does not have twins. Just curious!!

Yeah, I'd just let her do it if she really wants to, and choose another battle. ;)

I guess I'm leaning towards letting her do it if she really insists. Fortunately several months ago we started a ritual of saying goodnight to their toes as we zip up the sleep sack. (Isn't it funny, the things that start to seem normal?) So she seems to handle it OK if I say "It's time to take your shoes off and say night-night to your toes" and then do it all in one quick movement -- shoes off, "night-night toes!", zip. :D

Anyway, glad to hear that Sarah isn't weirder than the average 1-year-old.

Amy, I did do "full edit," but (as far as I could tell) I still couldn't change the title...? Thanks!

Dana, yes, that's my real first name. I didn't know there was another Alden in Boulder! How odd. There is another Alden with my same last name (!) somewhere in Colorado -- I found that out because we were both on the BabiesRUs registry at the same time! (She was having a singleton, as far as I could tell.) But I think she was in CO Springs or something.

We let Anthony sleep in his shoes. It's either that, or fight the tantrum that will inevitably keep everyone up...and then wake us up again when he sees he has no shoes on in the middle of the night!

Definitely pick you battles, I'd let her wear her shoes (luckily I don't think mine will ever do this as I never wear shoes unless I have too). Maybe you could get her some cute house shoes to wear around the house

As long as they were clean and not too tight as in cutting circulation it wouldn't be a big deal. I think I would save the battle for something more serious. Give in on the little things and put your foot down for the big, life threatening things.

mine love to walk around the house CARRYING their shoes but so far no tantrums to keep them on - in fact they throw tantrums to get them off!

I'm sorry but that is so cute, I couldn't help but laugh. :) I would let her, it wouldn't hurt anything, plus it saves you a big fight. :)

Please reconsider allowing her to wear her shoes to bed. Here's a true story.

My sister put her 18-month old son down for a nap at my dad's house while visiting and she left Cameron's shoes on. When he woke up he had what looked like burns on his legs, so she took him to the ER because it was a weekend and the pedi office was closed. Well, the staff there became suspicious, and the DCFS was called to investigate if Cameron had been abused. It wasn't until he fell asleep in the ER that they realized what had happened. While he was napping, they saw Cameron rubbing his feet/legs together in his sleep. They concluded that he had rubbed his legs with the rubber soles from his shoes, which literally created a friction burn. And no, he did not wake up while he was doing this. Needless to say, that was the last time he ever wore anything on his feet to sleep again.

In my house it's no longer a stage, it's becoming a lifestyle. Lucas has been doing this for MONTHS, and he is only getting MORE adamant as we go along. Shoes are his favorite thing in the world -- he will carry them around and play with them rather than his toys. He likes to put 2 diffferent shoes on and wears them to bed most nights, as well as sleep with his tennies instead of a teddy. If I try to take them off, he just sobs. I've learned it doesn't matter -- it's not worth the battle. If it makes the kid happy to wear shoes to bed, so be it. It doesn't hurt him (he doesn't rub his legs with his shoes), and obviously HE thinks it's comfy although I can't fathom it. There are so many other things to battle, this is one I've chosen to ignore. :)

Yes, Katelyn loves having her shoes in bed with her but not necessarily on all the time! dhe is a shoe freak and especially with flip-flops at the moment! She LOVES them!

Yes I say let her wear them to bed.

I'm pretty easy going unless its a dangerous situation.

Lily is shoe crazy. She gets so excited about shoes. I keep them all in a basket and sometimes she pulls them out and strews them throughout the house, excitedly yelling "shoes" as she does it. Hasn't wanted to wear them to bed...yet!

Chloe is about to turn 3 and sometimes wants to sleep in her shoes, esp if they are new. I just take them off after she falls asleep! LOL!

My DD loves shoes too. But, I didn't want her to wear them to bed and get it dirty because the shoes she loves to wear are the ones she also wears outside. So, when it came to bedtime, I simply told her the first day she wanted to wear them to bed that we don't wear shoes to bed. And, then I told her I would have them waiting for her once she woke up and that she could wear them then. That worked. Now before bedtime, she takes them off and goes up to bed.

Funny! My boys never did this, but after reading all the responses, I think you can safely say it's completely normal! I just wanted to suggest hanging a sack or pocket of some sort in her crib with her to put her shoes to bed in. A special place for her special shoes :)

I haven't read all the replies but my daughter is absolutely obsessed with shoes and has been for quite a while! I blame myself for it because I got into a bad habit of buying Gymboree shoes to match every outfit. I quit doing that and just splurged and bought her several pairs of Bear Feet but she selects her shoes at the beginning of the day (luckily she seems to already have good taste). She doesn't want to wear them to bed (not yet anyway) but she embarrasses me sometimes walking up to my friends kids and wanting to take their shoes off! One of her first words was "shoes". Personally I can't see how wearing them to bed would really be a problem, mine hate the footed pj's now though so we have done nothing but the Gymmies from Gymboree for a while.

Sorry for rambling but I think it's cute she likes shoes so much! :)

Funny you should ask this...just yesterday Jade insisted on taking a nap in her Crocs. I didn't want to fight. Whatever.

It's so funny, this little girl went all winter barefoot in the house and now is wearing socks and shoes all the time -- even socks with her sandals (what dorks, both of them do this often).

    What cute stories. :)

When I get to that point, I am pretty sure the boys will wear their shoes if that's the only way to get them to sleep. I am VERY motivated by good sleeping.
