Hi! I just came back from my second NST for this pregnancy and I was wondering something. Both times they did not monitor for contractions. I was wondering if this was normal because I know I had 3 of them today while I was hooked up, and during one of them I noticed that Jayden's (Baby A) HR dropped from the 150ish range to 118. Are they supposed to be monitoring for contractions during an NST or this only an option? Also, is the HR dropping that much good? When the nurse came back in to unhook me I didn't tell her about the contractions. I guess I'll wait to see my OB tomorrow and ask her then? Any info is greatly appreciated! :)

How far along are you? I find that to be strange. They always put a monitor on me for contractions. That's how it was discovered that I was having them every 1-4 minutes- but inconsistently. I've been on medication since 31 weeks because of them. I'd ask your OB about it tomorrow.

I thought that was the whole point of the NST??? to monitor you for contractions and to see if you are having them and to see how your babies react to them. I would totally talk to your dr. - maybe even call the nurse today!

I thought that was the reason for them too. The funny thing is, even though the monitor for the contractions wasn't on me, everytime I had one, the squiggly line would show up anyway. I don't know how in the world that happened. When I asked her what the third squiggly line was, she said, oh, that's contractions, but you weren't hooked up. It was probably just spazzing. She said, oh, I guess I should have hooked you up to that too. This is the nurse in my Peri's office. WTH? That's crazy that it was somehow picking up my contractions as I had them. LOL

okay, if i were you i would go to l&d right away especially if you saw your son's heartrate drop! This happened to me, and i thought the same thing of how wierd, but i never said anything because i figured that the nurse practioner would of said something if there was a problem. Well she missed it and two days later i lost my little girl at 37 weeks. I would go to l&d because you just never know and i would rather be safe than sorry than deal with what i deal with everyday.

Ok you just really freaked me out enough to call my regular OB. I had to leave a message with the Nurse, so I'm waiting for a call back before I rush to L&D. I am so sorry for your loss.

thank you...it's been almost two years, but i feel like it's my job to bring awareness to other people. I never knew that you could lose a child so late in the pregnancy but it happened. I really hope your little one is okay.

I start my NST's in two weeks when I start my weekly appts @ 27 weeks. I don't ever remember having them with my DD but once maybe.

Unfortunately I do know someone who lost their baby at 7 1/2 months. It was terrible. I'm hoping the nurse calls me back soon. I'm at work right now, so can't really rush out just yet.

hopefully they call soon. My feeling would be to still go to L & D after work if you don't hear back...i really didn't mean to freak you out...but i definitely didn't want you to push aside the weird feeling and chalk it up to a fluke. I thought this and a million times over i wish i would of just spoke up and gone straight to L&D

I'm sorry you are going through this, but I agree it at the very least should be discussed with your OB. Please keep us posted and you'll be in my thoughts.....

Thanks ladies. I've decided that if the nurse doesn't call me back by the time I leave work we'll be skipping soccer practice this evening and heading to L & D. You're so right. Better safe than sorry.

When I first started the NSTs they didn't monitor me for contrax either. They started that after week 36. At first all they wanted to see was a "reactive" heart rate from each twin. If they were sleeping and therefore not as reactive, then they would hook up the contrax belt or send me for a bio physical profile (only happened once because baby b was sleeping...). My OB said he didn't do the contrax monitor at first unless they had a reason so as not to freak out the Mom unless necessary. Twin Mommies are on edge any way, to see the BH on a monitor can be stressful after hearing so many stories of early labor.

Try and stay calm. Yes, things can and sometimes do go wrong. That's not to belittle the pain that others have endured. (My Aunt had a still birth under these same circumstances) But your babies are fine. They would have kept you if you strips were non responsive or the heart rate was too low. One dip rarely means anything.

On the same note, please come back and let us know what the doctor says.

okay, i agree with this, but then i don't. The beginning i agree with and the beginning of the the second, but to say that the babies are fine is not something that she knows. Doctors/nurses/nurse practioners are human like you and i, they make mistakes everyday....sometimes they do miss things. Does that mean that there's an issue with your little man...i don't know. I do know that it's better to double check to ensure that there isn't. Good luck.

Thank you! I talked to DH and we've decided that since we have an appt with my regular OB in the morning we'd talk to her about it then. :)

I understand. I'm still waiting for a call back. Their lunch was over 45 minutes ago, so if they don't call back by 4 I'll call them again.

I think you have a good plan, speak to the doctor and then follow their direction - just make sure that you stay on top of them, sometimes it takes forever for mine to call back - don't let it go to long....

Ok the nurse just called back and wasn't much help. She said that she didn't know anything about NSTs but since I had an appt tomorrow morning, my OB would have the results. She didn't seem worried. I guess we'll find out tomorrow morning. :)

I have not had to have an NST and my Doctor has never menitioned it. Is this common, should I bet getting them? I am 28 weeks now.

    Big  to you Carlee!

I just started NST's this week. My girls are di/di and my OB said that he usually waits a little longer to start NST's on di/di twins. So I guess it depends on your situation.

I'm not sure if everyone is supposed to have NSTs. I would ask your doc. I didn't have my first one until I was 34 weeks though.

Ok, went for my regular OB check up today got my GBS done and she checked me as well. 1 cm and 50%. YAY! I know it can mean absolutely nothing, but I'm still happy. She then hooked me up to the NST machine in her own office and the babies did great. I had 3 contractions in 15 minutes, but nothing real. She seemed really happy--told me to take it easy for the next couple of weeks because she wants me to stay pregnant for just a little bit longer.

Ok, there's my update. Thank you everyone for your assurances yesterday. :)

K this freaks me out- last night's NST baby B's heartrate was going down when I had contractions which were not showing up very well on the monitor, asked the nurse and she said nurse said it looked OK, and they always have doctors sign off on them- but now I'm really freaked out.

    Gah.
