Note to self: ALWAYS look in the oven before turning it on!

I just melted two plastic cups to nothing but a puddle. Thank goodness they had a Silpat under them to catch the goo! Gee, wonder how that stuff got in the oven? <_<

Don't you just LOVE the wonderful "storage" places they find for their things??! I'm glad it didn't make a mess of your oven. What about the smell of melted plastic??

I'm sorry that happened to you. I hope when you clean it it comes out nicely and doesn't give you to much of a problem. I do that all the time, turn the oven on and then when I go to put the food in the oven I usually have pans in there. That's where my dh stores the pans after he has cleaned them instead of bending over a little farther and putting them under the stove in the drawer where they are kept. I even had leftover food in there once because we forgot about it in there (we where keeping it warm during dinner). Thankfully no plastic only metal objects.

God, how many times I've done that! And I can't even blame it on teh kids! Lol...how many pan handles I've melted!

The one time that happened to me it was because the girls put some of their play pots and pans in the real oven. Fortunately, seeing their toys melted into a puddle was enough to convince them not to play with the oven anymore.

You were very lucky with the Silpat!

I have trouble with that rule myself -- but at least DH and I are (so far) the only people in our house who put things in the oven. I tend to leave cookie sheets and/or the pizza stone in there.

When I got married to dh I had to break him of using the oven as a storage place for items. No issues yet with the kids.

When I read your post the first thing I though was DH, not the kids  My DH is bad about "storing' the baking dishes and cookie sheets in the over too!

Please thank T&T on my behalf for redeeming themselves as not necessarily evolved big boys. Hope the clean-up isn't too terrible.

Hey, at least your boys have the excuse of being toddlers! My DH once left a pastry brush & some other utensils in the oven to dry. (What was he thinking? The world may never know...) I turned it on, and after a while thought, Hey, what's that funky smell...? :p

DH is famous for melting things too, but on the stove top. Back in the 90s when we would put burner covers on the stove he scorched 2 of them before I decided to take them off. He has burnt a cutting board (wood) and a wood trivet. He melted the microwave splatter cover. He has left a pan on the stove all night long with food in it, on low.
He does most of the cooking and still can't seem to remember which knob turns on what burner, or that the burners are still hot even after they have been off for a while.
At least you have the comfort of knowing that your kids will grow and learn not to do this. I think DH is hopeless.
