One of my boys has been on a food strike for about 2 weeks. It is literally driving me insane!! At their 18 month checkup he was in the 3rd percentile for weight and the peed told us to start giving him a carnation instant breakfast to help him get extra calories. Well he drinks that everyday, but that is about it. He wants nothing to do with breakfast, lunch is usually only a few bites, and dinner is touch and go. Yesterday he had a few cheerios, one bite of Mac n cheese, and some French fries for dinner.

When should I contact his ped or is this just a phase?

I want to add that when he does eat something it takes him forever. He can bite at a ritz cracker for 15-20min.

I think it is probably a phase. But I would say, if you are concerned there is no harm in calling the pedi. I have been using carnation instant breakfast for my two to help with their weight since they were 12 months old. I would keep offering meals to him and it will be his choice whether or not to eat it. I know I would be so worried about it too

Hopefully, it's just a phase. Is he teething at all? Both of my boys are and one is seemingly unaffected by it while the other refuses to eat much at all. I think what you're doing is good in terms of trying to add extra calories. Will he drink Pediasure? Will he eat other high fat (high protein) things like cheese cubes? You are at least fortunate that he'll take the Carnation Instant Breakfast. My DS refuses it and will also not drink Pediasure. He won't even drink milk, for that matter.
I have recently read about something called DuoCal which I believe is a powder that adds significant calories. I am not endorsing it by any means because I have never used it and still have to research it myself, but it might be one other thing to look in to/ask the doc about.
I feel your pain. I just find that my DS goes in and out of these phases, but overall, just isn't a big eater.
