"I don't like the beach", "I don't like my ponytail", "I don't like you Mama"

Wow....I am not sure where she picked up "I don't like....", but I really don't like it. It broke my heart when she said that last one. I thought I had a little more time before that came out.

    Anyone else hearing this phrase??

Josh(3) says that to me occasionally when he is mad. I respond with "oh, but I LOVE you!!". :hug99:

Oh No! That would break my heart too! I hope it's just a phase. I can tell ya though, try not to have too big of a reaction, cuz that will make her use it more. KWIM?

My niece is 6, and says "i hate you" to her Momma. That makes me mad, she ignores it, but at that age, I would think she needs to have a sit-down talk with her about what that phrase really means! I could be wrong though!

So far Blake has only used it in reference to food, "I don't like spaghetti," or "I don't like it mom." I think its just a phase and while it would break my heart too, they probably don't fully understand the context. :hug99:

Sofia has used the "I don't like" in reference to food and clothes. I think I would cry if she told me she didn't like me.

Like pp's I've only gotten "I don't like..." in reference to foods, and sounds (my auditory hypersensitives!), not me. It would also break my heart, but I'm sure she's just looking for a reaction. I love the "But I LOVE you!" response.

My boys also say "I don't like" but it is almost always in reference to food. If they are mad at me they say, "you hurt my feelings" or "I am mad" but they never say they are mad at me even though I know that's what they mean. I always say, "If you're mad, you have a lifetime to get glad".

BOTH of mine are in this "I no like _____________" phase. Ryan more so than Colin.

They have used that term with one another, like if Colin is on my lap and Ryan comes over he will say "No like RyRy" and I just tell him that I like RyRy and I like to have him close to me too.

    (RyRy is Ryan's nickname) :)

But it is usually in reference to food (before even trying it!!).

I don't think they get the whole meaning behind the word "like". Like when Colin says it when he is on my lap, I think he just wants some alone time and doesn't want Ryan to come over.

And Ryan just says it. I think more for the response than anything.

At this age, I really don't think they mean it the way we hear it.

We haven't quite gotten to the "I don't like xxx" h*ll but we are now stuck in "xxx is yucky" purgatory. :) They say things/situations are yucky when they don't like them or they're not supposed to do them -- e.g., "No, Rita, no put police car on choo-choo tracks! Police car on choo-choo tracks is yucky!" "No throw book on floor Natalie! Throw book on floor is yucky!" etc. Actually they don't say it about food very much (yet).

I would be so heartbroken! :( Mine haven't learned to say that... but Jack does say:

    "Mama's fat" LOL

He heard me say I am fat... (because I have really blossomed... Katie is getting huge!).

Well, to make you feel better...Sofia told me yesterday " I don't like you, mommy". I just laughed and thought of you!

Annie (4) calls me a "mean old mommy" when she doesn't get her way. Oh well. I'm her mom, not her friend. Limits have to start somewhere. But at 2 it would make me sad!

Dave went through the "I don't like..." phase 2x. When he was 2-ish he said "I done wike you, mama." I said "but I like you a lot!" He got over it pretty quick. He tried it again at the beginning of this summer. He said "Mom, you're mean and I don't like you!" I said "I like you even when you're mean. You need to apologize to me though because that's not a nice thing to say." He apologized and never gave me grief about that since.

We are going through the same thing, although it seems to have slowed down some lately. It seems like it is just a phase, but it is a little sad to hear the "I don't like mommy" comments.

    Oh no Maureen :(

Andrew is my "sassy" mouthed child I think... the latest is "no mommy, one more minute" or "no mommy, not yet" when I tell him it's time for nap or time to stop playing with something to eat, etc.

    I feel for you!

I got the "I don't like you, mommy" pretty early too. It was very rare and I can't remember him saying it in a long time. I think he was about 2.5.

If it makes you feel any better, my DS has a new favorite too! If something upsets him he says, "That's not very fair, Mommy!" It is driving me crazy for my little one to speak with such ATTITUDE! He even said it to the Sunday School teacher a few weeks ago...I felt terrible.

Oh Maureen! How heartbreaking! No one has said that........yet.

Lately it has been "I can't like _____." It is actually kinda funny. I can't like that shirt. I can't like carrots.

Thankfully "Momma" has not been the subject.

On the bright side, at least they are not saying "hate."

I would cry if they said that word about anything.

I "dislike" that word so much!
