my father in law told my husband that our girls (since they are fraternal) are not "real" twins!! We could not get him to realize
that they are "real" twins!! he said that they are just two kids
born at the same time - we said YEAH TWINS!! can't get much more
"REAL" than that!! he won't call them twins!!

What a dumb thing to say! Especially to a recently postpartum mama! I'm surprised you didn't hit him. [IMG]

What a ridiculous comment to make. Im sorry that your FIL is being so STUPID. Two babies born at the same time are TWINS that is what a twin is. Here is the definition of twin straight from the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

    Main Entry: 1twin
    Pronunciation: 'twin
    Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from twin twofold
1 a : either of two offspring produced at a birth b plural, capitalized : GEMINI
2 : one of two persons or things closely related to or resembling each other
3 : a compound crystal composed of two adjoining crystals or parts of crystals of the same kind that share a common plane of atoms
    - twin·ship /-"ship/ noun

Nowhere in the definition does it say that a twin must be identical to be a twin.

That is why men can't have babies! I bet he would think they were twins if he had carried them for 9 months.
    UGH!

I went to the grocery store recently and a stranger said the same thing to me!!!!!!! He said "How old is your little boy?" I said "They are both 8 Months, they are twins." He said, "Well, they are a boy and a girl so they are not REAL twins..." I said, "Well, I carried them in the same womb, they have the same birthday, so YES, they are REAL TWINS!" and I walked away and said "idoit" under my breath!

The same day I had a woman say, "Oh, twins! A boy and a girl! Are they identical?"

.... .... .... .... I said "Yes, except from the waist down..." HELLO, what is the DEFINITION of identical??????????

So that was irritating enough coming from complete strangers! I can't imagine it coming from family! I am sorry, BIG HUGS! I'd refer to them as "the twins" as often as possible in front of them if I were you! [IMG]

I met a lady today who didn't have "real twins". One of her "virtual twins" (that's what she called them! [IMG]) was her birth son, the other was a daughter she adopted, they had a 5 months age difference.

I'm sorry your FIL is a dork, try not to let it bother you. [IMG]

Gosh, if he says yours aren't twins I wonder what he would say about my twins, they were born 10 days apart.
