Not gaining weight early--will I catch up?

I'm very concerned that I've only gained 3 pounds in 15 weeks with twins, partially due to bad morning sickness. Still, I have been eating a LOT and I don't get it. The Barbara Luke book has me scared. Is there any chance that I will start to catch up if I continue to try to eat all I can? I am a small person (currently 5'1'' and 113).

Thanks for any feedback you guys have (or weight gain tips)!

Most likely you will. I didn't seem to gain very much early on and up until the very end I wasn't very big. BUT both my boy were over 5 lbs.

    Good luck

Thanks Kimani! Do you happen to remember how many pounds you gained total? The good news is that I have at the very minimum 15 more weeks to gain!

At 37 weeks and 1 day (yesterday) I have only gained 17 lbs. My babies are 6 lbs and 7 lbs so there are in no way distressed by my lack of weight gain! I started out heavier and I'm 5'8" but as long as your doctor isn't concerned, I wouldn't be either!

And trust me, I have eaten! For a while I had ice cream every night and all sorts of stuff but the weight never came on .....

    Just my 2 cents!

I hated the Barbara Luke book! I think the whole thing was made to scare the crap out of pregnant women!

Anyways, I only gained 8 lbs at 20 weeks due to super bad morning sickness and ended up gaining 40 lbs by the end!

I'm sure you will be fine!!

  6. I've lost 3-4 lbs at 19 weeks. My doctor says it's fine. Just had my u/s and babies are doing great and measuring a few days ahead!

During the first trimester, I had lost 8 lbs because I had no appetite. By the end of the pregnancy, I had gained 35 lbs and both kiddos were over 5lbs. Sounds like you are doing well Momma and you will catch up!

I had lost 3 pounds at the 20 week mark. Then started gaining about 23 weeks, and haven't stopped. I was not over weight to start 5'4" and 130 pounds. But now at 33 weeks (34 tomorrow) I am almost at the 40 pound mark for weight gain. I ate as much as I could, drank lots of ensure drinks plus protein, and had no morning sickness. As long as the babies are growing good and the doctors aren't concerned I wouldn't be either). I'm actually kinda glad I didn't gain in the beginning because I would probably be at 60 pounds now (knowing that it wasn't hurting the babies of course. The babies have always looked good and were 4 pounds 7 ounces at 32 weeks (estimate by ultrasound of course).

I would just suggest the ensure or boost drinks with added protein to make sure the babies are getting extra nutrients. I always make sure to drink at least one a day.

At the 12 week mark, I had lost 6 lbs. so you're ok. Don't worry about it. I only ended up gaining 24 lbs. total. Everyone is different.

I was 124 pounds to start with (5' 5") and at the 25 week mark last week had gained 15 pounds. Due to sickness early on, I also lost some weight in the beginning... I noticed around 20-23 weeks is when I really started to gain about 1 pound per week.

I'm almost 19 weeks and have only gained 3 pounds. I'm 5'6 and weigh 125 lbs currently. I am not worried b/c the babies are growing fine and I am sure I will gain weight the second half of the pregnancy. I also try to drink one Ensure High Protein a day for extra protein and nutrients....the chocolate flavor is good!!

I didn't start gaining until after 20 weeks despite eating constantly LOL

Im petite just like you. I didnt start gaining until after 15 weeks at which point my doctor started threatening ensure shakes (yuck!) I started eating more and more as I felt better and pretty soon I was gaining regularly. Sometimes it came 6 lbs every 2 weeks!
In the end, I gained 45 pounds!!! Eat & drink to thirst. You'll be fine if not theres always ensure or carnation instant breakfast!

I gained very little in the first trimester and ended up at 50 pounds of gain exactly at my 39-week induction. Most of it was babies, fluids, and such because 45 of the 50 was gone in the first couple of weeks postpartum. My boys were 6,1 and 6,9 and 19.75". OH, and now they eat like they have tapeworms and are very skinny so I think they were just draining the calories as fast as I could take them in.

ETA: I never had morning sickness but I didn't feel hungry and had to remind myself to eat even though nothing sounded good. My OB said it's a type of food aversion. That problem went away in the second trimester which must have helped as well.

I was always worried that I wasn't gaining enough weight (only 20 lbs by 31 weeks) but my doc never seemed concerned. I really packed it on my last trimester (total of 44lbs now) so you might be the same way.

I only gained 5lbs total so far and was concerned myself. Both my OB and Peri said it was fine & neith one was concerned, and I never had any sickness. My stomach is a good size. I just went to my Peri today for the anatomy scan and both boys are doing great! They are exactly where they should be he said.
