Not even CLOSE to sitting up

My girls will be 6 mos old on Sept. 13th, and they are nowhere NEAR sitting. I try to pull them up to sit so they can work on those muscles, but it's like they have no back muscles at all. Instead they try to stretch out, which throws them backward. If I bend them forward a little, they fold in half. They get plenty of floor/belly time...which they're great at, but they seem so far from sitting! My son sat unassisted at 6 mos, and at 5 months, he was able to sit between my legs without toppling forward or backward too much.

The girls were born at 38 weeks, and have been completely normal healthy babies. Has anyone else had theirs sit much later on? Is there anything I can do to help them build those muscles?

my DD didn't sit until a little over 7 months, she would flop over as soon as i tried to sit her up. i had her do a lot of time in a boppy, kinda lounging in there leaning to the side or back to try to strenghten her tummy/back muscles. i also put her in her bumbo for a few minutes a day, but she hated that thing... i don't know if it did any good though, because all of a sudden she could just sit up. it was like everything clicked and she figured out what she had to do.

Mine were closer to 7 months too. I just practiced a lot with them. One of mine was getting EI at the time. She showed me to put their arms in front of them to teach them to lean on their arms. If you are really concerned, talk to your pedi. I'm sure they'll be fine. All babies are different. I was so worried about one of mine. She was very floppy as a baby. We got EI for her and she ended up doing everything first. Her sister, who is much stronger and sturdier, did everything much later than her. I wish I never stressed out about any of it. They all catch up eventually.

My girls weren't even close to sitting up at 6 months either and still don't do a great job at 9 months. The ped wasn't too concerned at their 6 month appt and I am not sure what they are going to stay at their appt next week. They would rather roll around on the floor and start to crawl to get things!

Mine just started to sit up and they were 6.5 months, and it was a all of a sudden thing. One day they couldn't and the next they could. They never "tri-pod" before they sat up either.

do you have an exercise ball? someone told me to set them on that holding on to them at the waist for support. as they get stronger you can slowly do little roles with the ball to help them build up that control.

Mine were the same at 6 months. DS sat on his own at 7 months, and DD was closer to 8. They are absolutely fine. I think just continue doing what you are doing.

Mine didn't sit up until almost 7 months. One day they couldn't do it and the next day they could. They starting sitting up within one day of each other. I wouldn't worry.

I would count on them sitting up on their own a bit better closer to 7 months. My girls started at 6.5 months and by 7 months they were sitting up really well. Now, I can leave them without worrying if they are going to fall over. It's amazing how much they can develop in just a week. My DD's Physical Therapist said to put them in their boppies or prop a pillow behind them and let them be supported by that. They will learn much faster to use those muscles and when they get tired they will fall back and try again to get up.

Both mine sat up at 7 months, but one at the beginning and the other at the end. It was all of a sudden for us too. Once they realized they could do it, they loved it! Hang in there! BTW according to our EI evaluation, sitting for 10 sec. w/out falling over is counted as unassisted sitting.

Mine didnt sit until 7 months and really didnt show any interest. I gave them plenty of tummy time to strengthen their muscles and then I would let them practice by either sitting them in between my legs or letting them sit in a tripod with the boppy around them.

Mine are a little over 6 months and not sitting alone either, but I'm not worried! Every baby is so different, and it's not only getting the muscled strengthened, but they have to be aware enough to control those muscles. As everyone said, just all of a sudden it'll click that "Hey, I can straighten up and sit", and then they'll be doing it! :D

Don't stress over it. They will before you know it. Ryley started sitting up at 8 months and Kelsey just started a couple weeks ago.

My boys are 7mos and still are not sitting up (they can balance for a minute or too then tumble over), while it does worry me - I think they just don't get the practice their older sister did (note to self to practice more ;) ). Perhaps if they are still not sitting up by 8 mos we will make a pedi appt. Of course my daughter wasn't trying to crawl like the boys are now until she was 10mos. Maybe they are just all different.

One of my DDs was sitting at 6 months, but I had to put her that way and the only way she could 'get down' was to flop backwards. My other DD didn't sit until nearly 9 months and only when she could get into and out of the sitting position herself. However, within 2 weeks of sitting she was pulling up and cruising, and her sister started pulling up and cruising at the same time!

Don't worry.. they will get it!

Mine were closer to 8 months before sitting well. Even now, they'd rather crawl on their tummies than sit up.

Just keep practicing. Mine were born at 37w5d and just now are starting to sit without folding, as you say. About 2 weeks ago they were doing the same as yours. I just started putting them between pillows or between my legs. And I've showed them how to prop themselves with the hands when they bend over. I think they are getting better every day.

My boys showed no real signs of sitting before they just up and did it one day (at 6.5 months). FWIW, they were pulling to stand a mere 2 weeks later and walked very early so it was more a matter of getting their balance than strength. It's too soon to worry!
