Thankfully, my girls are still to little to start potty training, but if anyone can help me with my son, I'd be so grateful. He will pee in the potty all the time, but will not have a BM on the potty. He was just hiding and going in his pull ups or underwear, but now, he holds it and goes a little in his pull ups several times a day. We think we have tried everything, and the docs said to just ignore it and wait it out. Well, last week his little belly looked bloated and I know that's why. I know he probably shouldn't be wearing pull ups, but cleaning poop out of underwear all the time was getting to be too much. And we've tried letting him be naked in the house, but that doesn't work. I am at my wits end. Any advice is appreciated. Hopefully the girls will be easier!

Timothy didn't like to do bm's in the potty at all He's pretty good about wetting in the toilet, but just now (about 2 months later) is he really starting to get the hang of bm's. Pretty much you really just have to let them figure it out. I talked to several other mom's with the same problem and they all said the kids just have to figure it out. With Timothy, when he got to day 3 of not pooping, I'd give him a baby suppository and then read books to him while he sat on the potty. I only had to do that twice over the 2 month span.

Something I figured out is that Timothy hated, hated, hated wet wipes. So, if he had an accident, I'd clean him with probably 5 or 6 just to make it inconvienent and uncomfortable to use his underwear instead of the potty. I think that's the trigger for us that has finally got him where he really wants to go in the potty.

We also talked at non-pottying times about using the toilet. He told me that "the stinkies hurt and scare him". So I told him that he can have lots of snuggles while he does his business. He sits on the toilet and I sit on my knees and just hug him while he does it.

He is not much younger than my guys, and I would say it is all about control right now for him. I would get rid of the pull ups--he is using them as a crutch--he is going on 5, not 3. As long as it isn't a loose poop, let him help dump it in the toilet and clean up. Also, find one BIG reward--for Jon it was v-smile cartidges--and put it in the bathroom where he can see it, but not touch it. As soon as he is successful he gets the prize. My guess is once he has a major success, you won't look back.

    Hi! I am new here!

My older daughter now age 5. Had the same issues with pooping on the potty. I read something that seemed do-able(?). I told her she could poop in her diaper but that she had to stand in the bathroom. After a couple of days she transitioned herself to the potty. If this does not work they said to then have them sit in the bathroom with diaper/pull-up on. Give it a whirl it worked for me!!!!! :D

Dawn has an interesting suggestion, which might be worth a shot. And I agree with Sharon. At this age it is about control. Will he start preschool/kindergarten in the fall? I assume he will need to be going in the potty by then. I think getting rid of pull ups and having him clean up own mess is definitely the right answer. I also agree that a nice reward might help too. Like Sharon said, put it where he can see it, but do not allow him to touch or have it until he has gone x number of days/times in the potty. I would focus on the reward and not the accident.
