Not bothered by wetting pants

OK, so today I decided let's just have no diapers, and I broke out the underwear. They were very excited about having underwear. So far, each has wet their pants twice, but they aren't bothered by it. I thought the point of doing no diapers was so that they would be uncomfortable and/or upset about having wet their pants, and they would be more motivated to use the potty. They have peed on the potty several times before today, and each peed once today, but with my prompting. Not sure what to do at this point. They just seem excited to have to get clean underwear and pants.

It might be too early. I waited until about 2 weeks ago with my 2. Really just my daughter. Girls do train faster. I worked with her peeing on the potty while still in diapers. And she went for super long stretches with out peeing in her diaper. She would come running to me and ask to pee on the potty. She is usually dry through the night too. So with all that going for me I put her in underwear just this past Friday. She is doing great! So maybe wait a bit. Or work on the peeing with the diapers. They really will let you know when they are ready.

My son is not there yet. All we can do is suggest - praise - and let them go at their own pace and build their own confidence.

good luck! I am now working on getting her to poop in the potty. That's a whole separate thing! ugh!

I had been told by my pedi that if they are not bothered by "accidents" then they are not ready yet. That's the point we were at last August, and only last week did we make a successful transition to underwear. They're still not really that upset, but at least they tell us and want to get changed (before this they'd just keep doing what they were doing until we noticed they were wet!).

For several months they've been very good about using the toilet, but still wore their diapers. Now it's diapers just for nap and nighttime - yay!

I agree with pp that they most likely are not ready. I'd say give it a try in a few months.

My DD was the same way. I waited a few months and she was so much better. Its been a month with no problems. Good Luck!

I agree, if they could care less, they aren't ready for potty training. I would give it a rest and try again in a month or two.

Well, by naptime I was ready to bag it, but DH (he's off this week, why we are starting it now) wants to stick with it. They did do better after nap. Sidenote, I did put them in a pull-up for nap and they both were pretty wet and pooped. Only one accident each, and they seemed to care more about being wet. Ainsley wanted to wear her favorite skirt, and she was conscious about not wanting to get it wet. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

OK, well I gave up for now. It's still too much of a game, and they aren't truly aware of when they have to go. They just thought it was fun to put on new underwear and pants and wash their hands.

Kelly - just wait a bit and keep an eye on how long they are going with dry stretches. Phoebe would be dry consistently every morning and then go until lunchtime dry in her diaper. Once those signs were there it was, well so far, easy! Take a breath and give it some time!

kelly - i have been looking for a post from you on this topic since i knew you were going to try - i'm going to try putting cameron in underwear this weekend and see what happens. alisha is definitely NOT willing yet, although i think she COULD do it she doesn't want to and i'm not going to push it.

how long are you going to wait before giving it another try? and are you going to continue to have them sit on the potty at regular intervals, or just when they ask?

I will suggest using the potty at regular times, and if they want to go, great, if not, oh well. Today Bea wore pull-ups and initiated going to the potty a couple times. Ainsley was very insistent on wanting a diaper, not a pull-up, and only went to the potty with prompting. I think I'll wait to try again until preschool is over (June).

that's great that she is initiating - that's progress at least, right?!? :) i'm going to give it a shot this weekend with cameron, and if it doesn't go well i'll wait until it's nicer out and they can run around outside naked or in just shirts and underwear - less mess that way! :)
