Noise Control in a small house

We have a small home that up until now felt very cozy. Now it is stressing me out because after the babies go to bed I feel like I have to tiptoe everywhere. We turn off all the lights, except for the TV (which is turned down very low) and then my husband and I whisper the rest of the evening. Is this what life is going to be like? Also, the babies are waking up when they hear my husband's alarm which goes off at 4:15 and the only bathroom we have is right next to their room!! Anyone else with a small house? How do you manage noise control? Presently we both sleep with our bedroom doors open. Should I shut our doors? I do have a air purifying fan that runs in their room that does provide some "white noise" but it may not be enough. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

i play a lullaby cd in the babies' room when they sleep so the noise from the house doesnt wake them...when i forget, if the phone or doorbell rings, thats the end of naptime!!

We don't have a small house, and we still shut all the doors and run as much white noise as possible in their room. We use a very loud box fan turned towards the wall in the kids room at all times.

I would shy away from being unusually quiet because then your kids may only be able to sleep under those conditions. Aside from the white noise, we carry on as usual when the kids are sleeping.

As a matter a fact, our Christmas tree came crashing down 2 nights ago. It was soooo loud, and the kids slept right on through!!

    Good Luck!

During the day I keep the radio on where the babies are sleeping to help drown out sound and at night we use a white noise machine. Although I notice the babies nap better if there is noise around, if I am being too quiet they wake up sooner, I think they may be comforted by knowing that someone is around and they aren't alone (or at least I like to think that).

I'm in the same boat. Our house is CREAKY and my boys have become light sleepers as they've gotten older. See my blog if you want to know how bad it is: http://web.mac.com/mzikovitz/iWeb/Site%202...28F89EDF7C.html

We have white-noise machines going in two rooms (where the boys sleep) during naps and one in the babies' room at night. Seems to block out a lot of sounds. But we still tip toe. Everyone keeps saying "they'll get used to the noise" but I don't believe it.

My DD is a very light sleeper so we got the Homedics white noise machine. She loves the rain one and it drowns out my VERY loud house. My older DS are VERY loud at night when she is trying to sleep. I can hear her over the machine too which I like but she cant hear us.

I totally agree! We did the total silence with our first (whispered and all) and he would wake up if you forgot to whisper, or coughed, or ANYTHING! It was a year long nightmare! With the twins I have made sure that we don't turn down the tv or anything. Not to mention we have a 3 yr old running around screaming. DS still sleeps with music playing in his room to this day. If there's any way to "train" them to sleep during noisy times, I would definately try it! Hopefully it's not too late for you. Good luck!

I live in a small place and found myself wispering, tip toeing when the girls were sleeping etc. - but I've been told that they will get used to that and any little noise will wake them up, so I stopped being so quiet. I know easier said than done sometimes, but it has worked. After I put the girls down for bed, I wash the dinner dishes - habit - but I think they've become accustomed to the water noise etc. and they fall right to sleep. I've also NOT turned down the TV real low so THAT noise "amplifies" any "unknown" noise that may wake them. I'm by myself (and don't walk around talking with myself) and was worried that when I have company the girls will deffinately wake up if they hear voices, so I started talking on the phone for a short time after putting them down to get used to "noise" and this has worked too. But I know when the girls were younger and I was completely exhausted, I didn't have the guts to do anything to wake them and would cut anyones head off if they so much as peeped in my house once they went down. It does get easier and once they are really asleep, they dont wake very easily. Good luck
