A friend of mine mentioned that she was under the impression (had heard in several places) that yogurt is not supposed to be given to babies because of the cultures. We looked it up on google and know for sure that isnt the case, but I was just curious if anyone has ever heard that before. Its so strange the information that gets passed to people incorrectly sometimes, eh?

I have to admit that I have never heard or read that anywhere. In fact, we started giving yogurt at a fairly young age.

Yogurt is good for babies because of the cultures...maybe she just got it mixed up

I was under the impression that it's a great way to get the milk into them!!

I know my peds recommend it after like 8 or 9 months... some kids can be allergic to the milk products I guess... but I know lots of moms who use plain yogurt as a first food...

Our ped said no yogurt until 12 mos (which I found annoying and didn't necessarily agree with)...but we lasted until 12 mos anyway. I think he was just trying to be cautious since we were preemies and struggling w/reflux?

We started on it at about 11.5 months with no problems...it's a staple.

I do think she got mixed up...but she is kinda stubborn :) and insists that two different famillies she has babysat/nannied for in the past wouldnt give their almost 2 year olds yogurt for (get this) the same reason they cant have honey! Yogurt has botulism spores...who knew?! I know yogurt is totally fine I was just really baffled and was curious if ANYONE had ever heard such a crazy thing or if my one friend is the only one! :) HAHA

I've never heard of that either. I 'm no expert, but I would think the cultures would help since their digestive system are so immature.

Nope, never heard that one. Is she from a different country by any chance? I know different cultures have very different ideas on what is safe and unsafe for babies (and pregnant women).
