So, my Becca will be joining us over here in the 1-4 forum on Monday!!! I can't believe it. Anyways, here's my issue:

Becca has not gained ANY weight and has barely grown since her 9 month visit. She was weighed at her recent sick visit and weighs exactly the same : 21lbs5oz. Now, I know that she is not failing to thrive or anything at that size. But, She has always been in the 85+ percentile. She was born off the charts and finally landed on the charts at 9 months (85ish percentile both height and weight). Now she's in the 54th for weight and 25th for height! So, her curve is changing. I was always told that what is important is that they maintain "their curve". My boys always have (90+ percentile).

So, anyone else been in a similar situation. What did your pedi say? I'm sure it's a wait and see thing. And I've heard all the "they get more active and burn more calories" etc. I just didn't know if anyone has heard anything different from that and if there is a need for concern. I mean, she's developing otherwise but this is just different for me.

    thanks!

My oldest son was 10-10 when born and continued to be off the charts for a really long time. When he hit two, his curve started "correcting itself" and he started the downward fall to his 10-25% curve. It's just him, but we did take him to a GI for some intestinal issues. He said that even though he fall way off his previous curve, he didn't fit FTT.

Now, my twins are definitely FTT. But that's a whole other issue.

Sarah hardly grew at all from 9 to 12 months either. At 9 months she was practically maxing out the weight charts :D -- by 12 months she was down to 65th %ile. The doctor said it was fine and as long as she was still energetic and eating well, we shouldn't worry.

I don't know this for a fact, but I also suspect the doctor would say that any one 3-month span does not matter so much. If she has been healthy and growing up till now, they're not going to worry because she goes 3 months without putting on any weight. It would be more of a concern if she goes another 6 months and still doesn't put on any weight.

One of my children lost weight from 9 months to 12 months with no illness involved. It was just the activity level had picked up tremendously. The ped did want to watch it but it has never been a problem since then.

I guess i wouldn't worry too much about the weight because of the activity level, but what gets me is her height dropping from 85+% to 25%. That seems like a huge drop. Just watch it and if for some reason she still drops more or something doesn't seem right, i would look more into it. Give her until she goes to her 15 or 18 month appt and see how she is then.

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. I'm going to bring up my concerns with the pedi on Thurs. She's also been pooping a lot for the past 3-4 weeks. Almost every diaper. No other sign of ailment. Teeth are in. The poop is causing a diaper rash that just won't go away because it's not having the chance to heal. Poor baby.

You know, height measurements can be really inaccurate at that age, especially if different nurses are doing them....so, if they measured her maybe half an inch too long at 9 months, and then half an inch too short at her recent appt, that could totally explain the drop in height percentile.

This happened with Karina -- at 15 months, they told us she was nearly 36 inches....which I *knew* was wrong, because she could still walk underneath the kitchen countertop overhang, where it measures 34.5 inches. And then at 18 months, she was measuring 35.5 inches, and the nurse was all perplexed that she had shrunk.

Let us know how she is, Alison. I agree with Becca though. It can be really off.
