No air conditioning, very hot nursery!

the nursery is on the west side of the house and the sun beats in it from early afternoon until dusk. We don't have air conditioning and we are experiencing record breaking temperatures in WA. Our thermostat says 87 degrees (and that's in the hallway) so who knows how hot it is in the nursery.

We have a ceiling fan, but it's not doing much. I kept the door ajar -- but it's still stuffy in the room. We have black out blinds, and I don't keep the window open because the nursery is facing a loud street!!!! PLUS, the blind hits the window non stop when you keep the window open -- it bangs from the breeze. Any other ideas? Should I get a window fan or will that bring in too much dust? Maybe a standing fan?

Definetly a fan at the very least will help. Thick curtains over the blind will help not only block the light out but help block the heat out too. I have lined curtains in all our bedrooms (we live in south carolina, it's been over 90 this week already).

If it gets really bad you could look at getting a window air conditioner for either their bedroom or a close window in another room to try to cool it down.

I don't know if a cool mist humidifier would make it too damp in the house, but that's something to look into also.

It is hot here in CA also. What I do to keep babies room cool-keep shutters closed, I bought dark fabric and just hanged over blinds(it makes room darker, great for naps, and also cooler). Fan is working full time with cool humidifier next to it.

adding more fans is a must! Id also let them just sleep in their diaper. Is this a cooler room in the house they could temporarily move too?

We are lucky to have central air and heating but I know that if it was getting too hot I'd be using a cool mist humidifier, of course we live in the middle of the dry desert and need and humidity we can get! Yay New Mexico, lol!

I feel your pain...we live in a townhouse with the bedrooms on the third floor. I recently put up dark blue bed sheets over the two windows in their room to keep out the early morning sunlight. I was really worried with the temps that we are having since I cannot open the windows with the sheets on. Thankfully, I think the sheets are keeping out some of the heat (like PP suggested). I also really try and keep the windows closed throughout the house during the day...when the temp drops a little at night, I open everything up and get the air circulating with window fans.

For the babies, around 9pm, I creep upstairs, and set a fan in their door. I turn it on low to get some fresh air circulating in their room. I then set my alarm for 3am (!!) so I can remove the fan and close their door before the sun comes up!

I would try a portable AC unit, too. We cannot because the windows in our house will not accomodate the venting hose, but I think it would be wonderful.

Good luck...it is supposed to cool off this weekend!!

If you can swing the cost, you can get a portable A/C unit. When we lived in WA, our house did not have any A/C and the summers got quite hot. So we had a portable unit in their room. Really that was the only effective thing for us. You can also get blackout shades and that will help keep the room cooler.
