Well the title says it all. I'm having pain after I pump. When I first start pumping for about the first 30 seconds it is SO painful I want to cry, then it goes away. Then after I pump it kills. More on my left side, and that is the side the produces more milk. Could my flanges be to small? TIA

I had that problem and my flanges were too small. You may want to try a larger size. Good luck.

Can you describe the pain more? Is it only in your nipple? Is it in your entire breast? Does it feel like a burning pain or more of an achey pain? Is it painful to the touch or more of an "internal" pain? How long does the pain last?

Sorry for all of the questions - just trying to get a better idea of what type of pain you are having. There are a variety of things that can cause nipple pain - so I thought I'd ask for more details! :)

I had same problem, and two things.... for me, the flanges were too small AND I was trying the pump at too high of a setting. Does the pump you are using have intensity settings? If so, try turning it down. You should have your entire nipple and part of the aereola go into the part that is sucked...

Unfortunately I have to stop now :( but that is what the problem was for me

Is it only in your nipple? Yes it is only in my nipple
Is it in your entire breast? nope
Does it feel like a burning pain or more of an achey pain? I wouldn't describe it as either, but I don't know the word I would use. It's almost like hving freezing cold nipples
Is it painful to the touch or more of an "internal" pain? It's painful to touch
How long does the pain last? It last about an hour after pumping

My pump this morning was really painful almost the whole time. I really wanted to quit, but I stuck it out.

The pump I have does have an intensity setting and I have turned it down, but it hasn't helped.

Does your nipple look white after pumping? I had this happen to me while pumping and while breastfeeding - it was very painful, but the pain for me radiated through my entire breast. I had nipple blanching and vasospasms. It did get better with time - but the first few months were very painful and I cried quite a bit.

Here's a link to read more about it:

Do you have an LC at your boys' hospital that could watch you pump to see if the flanges fit incorrectly? Or possibly offer you some other advice? Do you put lanolin on your nipples before pumping?

My first reaction was the flange might be too small too.

Flange size made a big difference for me. But the only time I had true nipple pain was when I had thrush. I hope that isn't it for you.

I spoke with the LC at the hospital today. While I was pumping I had a clearish fluid come out of one of the pours and after that the pain kind of went away. She said it was most likely a clogged pour. I have concluded that it was a blister. I noticed another one on the other side so hopfully that will "pop" and all the pain will go away!!

ok so it isn't just the blister. There is white stuff on the end of the nipple. I'm going to visit the boys soon so hopefully I can find the LC and talk to her!

Did you get to see the LC? Did she have any idea about what might be going on? How's your pain now?

Hope it is feeling better! :)

I always thought white meant thrush, am I wrong?
