nipple damage from breast pump?

since I started pumping, my nipples have become very sore. They are red and look as if they are being 'pulled' from the areola. This makes it very uncomfy when the babies try to latch.
Does anyone have an experience with this type of issue?

I am thinking I will put the pump away for awhile, as much as I'd like to build up my supply and be able to freeze some milk.

    Any advice?

It sounds like you could have the wrong size breast shields for your pump. Do your nipples rub while you are pumping? I know that mine were sore, red, rubbing and I had to go up to larger shields than the ones that came with the standard pump kit. A LC can size you for the correct shields. HEREis some info about choosing the correct size shield for Medela pumps.

The other possibility could be a yeast infection on your breasts if your nipples are bright red and sore. Do you have any pain or do the babies have any evidence of thrush? I know I was more prone to get yeast infections when I was pumping. If this is the case you may need a prescription medication.

Feel free to ask any questions! I hope it gets better soon.

My first thought was that the horns might be too small. They come standard 24mm, but do come in bigger sizes (at least I think that is the standard). Melissa gave a great link. Make sure you don't have thrush too!

Just wanted to add you should make sure you are slathering the lanolin on. I had the same issue when I first had the babies, and it was a life saver!

I would have a LC look at your nipples and the pump horns you are using, you may need to go up a size like pp mentioned. Ialso second using lanolin, I still use it every time I pump.
If you just started pumping I know it took a few days/week for my nipples to toughen up and it did hurt and mine actually got blistered. But then it stopped hurting and the blisters went away. My LC said some peoples skin is just more sensitive than others.

Make sure to use the lanolin BEFORE pumping and AFTER nursing. HTH [IMG]
