Nighttime Feeds - Do you burp them?

When my boys wake for their middle-of-the-night feeds, I change their diapers, bring them out into the living room, and nurse them, and they nurse for about 10-15 minutes and then drop off to sleep. Since they are sleepy their nursing is calmer than the daytime and they don't seem to get much air in, and after they drop off to sleep I just move them back to thier cribs without burping them. I used to burp them but it seems nothing comes up and I just ended up disturbing them. Does anyone else do this?

Oh, and side note, I finally figured out a way to fall asleep while nursing the boys which makes the night feedings a little easier! I nurse sitting up and I have a wierd-shaped pillow that fits behind my head perfect - I just latch them on and drift off, it's much easier! [IMG]

    Hi Kendra!

I always burped them, but we have reflux, and were also bottle feeding. As long as they aren't waking up screaming, I would leave them be.

Congrats on figuring out the nursing/sleeping position! [IMG]

Our boys fall asleep during their last feed. I've been told that when they do that, they usually don't swallow as much air as they do when they are awake. Also, you're nursing and you probably don't have as much air to deal with than if you were using a bottle. Having said this, there have been times that Jamie will wake up and I have to burp him, but he goes back to sleep if I catch him quick enough. Those times are rare.

My dh was a baby-burping fiend! He would burp them after EVERY feeding, and once in the middle of it. I thought he was crazy. [IMG] But, we also had some issues with mild reflux & tons and tons of gas & the burping seemed to help.

I'm pretty sure when you're nursing they get a lot less air than bottles, though, so I think if they're happy & sleeping then let them sleep!

And kudos for finding a way to sleep & nurse!! I never got the hang of it.

I always try to burp them. If they are too tired, they won't burp, and it doesn't even wake them up when I try late at night.

We don't burp them after their last feed. Only if they aren't fully alseep or seem fussy. Or even sometimes when they seem to be bfing longer then normal, I would stop them, burp them, then put them back on till they were sleepy/full.

Still burping here! One of my guys has reflux and sleeps better after he's burped.

I just gently lean them forward and pat their back. If they need to burp they'll do it. It seems much easier and quicker than in the day time. They don't wake up by my patting or their burping.

I didn't burp them after they were about 3 months but before that I did because they reflux.

Good job on the bfing!!! [IMG]

We only burped if they were still awake after the feeding. If I remember correctly, the burps were less frequent. I also read that they don't take in as much air because they aren't as awake.

We stopped trying to burp Ben in the night a few weeks ago, when we realized he just didn't need it anymore (Owen, bless his little heart, goes 7pm-7am without waking).

Before about this time though, if we didn't burb we'd pay the price later in the night when he woke up uncomfortable. Now I bf, hold him for just a minute and lay him back down with no problem. He's never really had reflux issues, so I think that helps.

Always burp both of them, including my ds who has reflux. Otherwise it will end up in their beds. I always put them down awake, my ds is also awake after a night feeding (he usually screams for a little bit b/c of the reflux; my dd sleeps through), and they sooth themselves to sleep very easily.
