So....from what I've read, a good time to night train a child is when they've shown in a pull up that they are holding it till morning or not peeing as much during the night. Well, DD1 (3.5yrs) has been completely day trained for a year, but she has never shown these signs. So we decided to just put her in underwear at night and hopefully she will learn to do it on her own within a few days, maybe a week or so. Its been 3 nights and she doesn't seem to be showing any improvements. I usually get her up to go potty when I go to bed, a few hours after she goes down. We were hoping that she would then be able to make it till morning, but she wets her pants in the middle of the night, hence, changing sheets, sleeper, underwear. Now I'm sure some of this is natural. Do you have any advice that would make this an easier transition? What kind of reasonable expectations should we have? In the end I would really hate putting her back in a pull up because I want her to be independent of the diaper, especially since she has mentioned she would like having it back. TIA

Honestly, I'd let her keep wearing the pull-up. And like you've read, stop using it when she is consistently dry in the morning. Why torture yourself? She'll get there.

Night training is somewhat of a misnomer. You can't train an unconscience body to do something, you have to wait for it to be ready. One of my boys never wore a pull up after the day he first pooped in the potty. The other one--who trained 6 months earlier, wore a pull up at night for a full year and a half at night--he was almost 5 when he finally stayed dry at night. I would do as Marie said, and just keep the pull up on at night. When she is dry for a week, then go to underpants.

She's showing no improvement, so DH and I are thinking back to the pull up--oh well :(. Last night I got her up to go about 3 hours after her bedtime and she'd already wet her pants. I got her up 4 hours later, she was dry, but needed to go potty. 3 hours later she had wet her pants. I would agree that maybe she's just not ready--don't want to force it. Hopefully she will be soon. Thanks for your input!

The pull up is back on her. We feel we don't want to push things.

We are in a similar situation, though mine have not been day trained that long. But basically they just aren't showing the signs of being able to stay dry through the whole night, so we still do pull-ups at night. You are not alone! :)

Just wanted to say I'm glad I found your post. We have the same issue and I didn't know if I was doing the right thing leaving the girls in pull-ups at night or not. It's like they've become dependent on them or something. I thought about just taking them off, but I really don't want to deal with the mess every night. They are no where near consistently dry in the mornings, so I think we'll wait a while.
