Night light or Not to Night light

Normally when they wake in the night they may cry a minute or two, but we don’t go in. Unless it’s a screaming cry…which is what we think is a nightmare. When we do go in my DD is shaking and pointing to something in the room, after a minute we leave and she is fine.
My husband thinks she is waking up and it’s just too dark in there and that too adds to her being scared and getting upset.
He wants us to have a nightlight and I do not. My thought is it only happens once a month or so and I think a nightlight might actually keep her from going down at night. (I really need her to go to bed and fall asleep asap since that’s when I’m finally able to take my shower and get ready for the following day).

    Any experience with this?

that is what we are using. it stays lit for 15 minutes so it gives them time to wind down and get settled before it goes out. you can buy them at lots of places, including BRU. i was unsure about this situation too, but didn't want anything that plugged in so these work great. btw the green is the brightest lit, the pink barely looks like it's lit.

Well, we've had a nightlight in their room since the day we put them in the nursery (about 5 months old). Maybe they're just used to it, but they never have problems going down. :pardon: Jack used to have horrible night-wakings (which I think may have been night terrors), but the night light didn't seem to make a difference one way or another.

I don't have any experience in changing this (going to a night light or getting rid of it) at this stage in their lives. Just the change in lighting may disrupt your DDs sleep for a bit until they get used to it, but I can say it doesn't keep my boys up at all.

We have a very small lo light night light, similar to this. It does seem to help them a little bit when they wake at night it also helps when I go in to check on them before going to bed. I tried a cute one from Ikea and it was too bright and was keeping them from going to sleep.

We've used a nightlight in both of their rooms since they were born. We actually use the Pedia Vapors night light in their rooms. I think because they are so used to it, it has not hurt their sleep but the lights are also not very bright either.

We finally caved in a gave my 3 year old a tyke light and honestly it keeps him from coming out over and over and over again. I was against it because I thought he would play forever but he doesn't and he knows that if he doesn't stay in bed then I am going to take the light away. best of luck either way

our girls have had a night light in their room since day 1 - it's just a plain nightlight (i didn't want anything that looked like a toy) and we have it plugged in behind their change table so that a) they can't reach it (my girls are in toddler beds now) & b) the light is very defuse & doesn't shine directly on either of their faces so it doesn't keep them up. it's really just enough light to see by for night time checks & wake-ups. but i like that because when i do go in at night, i don't have to turn on any lights to figure out what's up. GL with your decision!

we have a $2-3 nightlight in their room because I feel bad leaving them in the pitch black. It doesn't affect their waking at night and when we're at my parents the light in there for them is much brighter and they ignore it after a few minutes.

We've used them for both boys but they are burned out and we've just left them! LOL

If it's only happening once in a while, I wouldn't get them used to it. :pardon:

We have never used a nightlight, and I don't regret it. One of my girls has just recently started to say "it's so dark" when I go to leave for the night so I leave the hallway light on (very slight light streaming under their door) for about 10 min. or so until they are fast asleep. Once in a while one of them will wake up scared, etc., but I personally feel like it's better than them potentially getting up to play in the middle of the night because now they can see everything. A nightlight would definitely take some getting used to if they never had one.

If it only happens once in awhile I don't think I'd try the night light; especially since she goes back down seemingly easy?? Maybe a compromise would be to put one in a hallway if you had one and leave their door cracked open.

We never did night lights but they each have a bear that lights up. They love it and they turn it on when they go to bed so they can play for a little bit before falling asleep.

We use a nightlite. A very small one since we moved to their cribs.

I think it's unnecessary before 2.5 or so, when they really start to develop fears. That being said, their humidifier has a blue light.

We've always had a nightlight, but it's more for us (so we can see if we go in there at night) than for them. It never seemed to make any difference in how well they slept (which has always been fine). Now they have those Oxo Candela nightlights, which are pretty bright, but they like them so they can read in bed before they fall asleep. Then the batteries wear down about halfway through the night and they get recharged during the day.

Anyway, at your kids' age, I don't think they are really scared of the dark (not enough imagination yet), but IMO a nightlight wouldn't do any harm, either.

Well I do have to say that I don't agree that kids that young aren't scared of the dark yet, because my ds twin has been scared of the dark since birth.

I've never used a nightlight for my older kids. The only light we used was in the hospital, we'd leave the bathroom light on in my room after they were born so I could see to check on them and to nurse them.

When we got home from the hospital, for the first 2 weeks Liam would cry every single time I put him down at night. I started leaving my closet light on so I could check on him easier, and as soon as I did that, he'd go right to sleep. I turned the light off at night again and he'd wake up fussing several times during the night.

So in the end, yes, the twins have a nightlight. Sometimes I turn it off when I go to bed, but then inevitably he wakes up crying and I have to turn it back on anyways. I just bought a regular one from walmart, but I have it plugged into an extension cord behind their dresser, and have the light itself sitting on the dresser so I can turn it on and off. I bought a really cute one from target but within 2 weeks the LED long life bulbs were already dying! Even with fresh batteries and a fresh charge (they were rechargeable batts).

I would say, if she goes back down easily, and it's not often, I wouldn't mess with a nightlight. I like those tyke lights, those are cool, you could also try a Gloworm that she can turn on herself!

I was going to suggest a gloworm too.

Alice and Royce have never had a nightlight. But they did have gloworms and the amount of light is minimal, and it turns off after a few minutes.
