So when the twins were discharged from the NICU we were handed an appointment card for a follow up appointment several months down the road. I forgot about it until this week when we received a reminder card in the mail.

I called them to find out exactly what this appointment is for the receptionist said it's basically a developmental check. We'll meet with 4 or 5 different doctors and each will see how the twins are doing developmentally. I think we'll be seeing a neurologist (who we already see for one of the twins), an audiologist, a developmental doc and not sure who else.

I just wanted to see if any one else's NICU's do this and how it went. Apparently the cost of this visit was included in our NICU bill so we won't be responsible for paying for anything.

Mine were 33weekers and no we didn't have this. Just regular check-ups with their pediatrician.

We had a hospital calling us for the follow up for 2 months before i realized what it was for !!

We went to our 4 month appointment at 6 months - and they check the babies all around development- hearing, movement, coordination, eye tracking, sitting, rolling, holding toys, moving toys from hand to hand, etc.
They also gave me a ton of things to do to help the babies learn new skills. ie: how to help them learn to sit, how to help them learn to crawl, how to help them move from laying to sitting, etc.
There were 2 physiotherapists, a nurse, a neonatologist, and a pediatrician there for our appointment. They put the babies one at a time on a large gym mat (yes it was disinfected) and ran through a series of non invasive tests. ie: seeing if they would follow noises with their heads, would they roll over to get a toy, etc etc)

I am in Canada - so cost wasn't a factor for us as its covered as a part of our health care. I am not too sure if I would have paid for it if I had to, but if its already covered then go for it.

We had this. They called it High Risk Infant follow Up Clinic. We went at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years. The first couple of visits were with a neonatologist, neurologist, nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist. For 2 years and possibly even 1 year ( i can't remember) they had a psychologist, too. I think we payed a copay for it. It is great if they offer it. They give you good information and suggestions.

We didn't have one but would have gone if we had. We had some developmental worries with jessy and this would have put some of it to rest

We didn't have one and our boys were 34weekers but it sounds awesome:) I do know our friends who we met in the NICU have to take their daughter to a "preemie clinic" on certain dates until she turns 2 and can possibly "graduate" but she was born at 24wks!

I've never heard of it. Anthony was in the NICU for one week, born at 38 weeks. But I agree-it does sound like a wonderful opportunity!

We were followed until the girls turned three. Developmental therapy and testing, audiology, and neonatal checkups. It was good in one way but by the end (when it was clear that we didn't have any problems) I was pleased when the appointments stopped.

I'm in New Zealand and it's covered by our health system as well

Didn't read all the responses, but yes, we had this. We were followed for about 3 years and than released. I appreciated the extra attention and care :)

Well our appointment is tomorrow morning. As far as I know we just have the one appointment. I'll let everyone know how it goes and what all went on afterwards. Thanks ladies!
