By this time next week I will have two baby boys! I have received so many hand-me-down clothes and new clothes that they have quite a wardrobe. I just don't know how to dress them! My mom is here helping, but we are from Southern California.

What is adequate clothing inside the house?
What should they wear when we go out? I bought the buntings with the elastic that go around the carriers.
What should they wear at night?

Please let me know what you think for fall and winter in New England (Massachusetts).

    Thank you

We are in Maine and we just started puttin the boys in their zip up sleepers. They were born in Feb and they were in onsies then an outfit then swaddled back then. We really didnt take them out anywhere till spring save for docs appts. Sounds like you have the outdoor stuff taken care of. We bought little snowsuits that they could wear beltted in the seats. Just make sure they have a warm hat since heat goes up an out their cute little heads. HTH Congrats and good luck next week!!!

Hey Jennifer, congrats on your babies!
I live in Mass and for the most part I stayed in last year when my girls were newborns. I kept them in a onesie and sleepers, and they were swaddled ALOT. If we did go out I would usually put a onesie, long sleeve shirt, pants, fleece jacket on. Then I would put a receiving blanket over their legs, a hat on their head, and I had a bundle me on their carrier. I may have overdone it but it was really cold last year!!
I was told the rule of thumb was always one more layer than what you are wearing.

    Good luck!!!

I live in MA too, and had my boys last December.

We kept the house at around 68 degrees most of the time. In the house they wore cotton sleepers, or onesies with pants, and they were swaddled or under a blanket.

At night we did cotton sleeper and fleece sleep sacks (the ones with the swaddle arms). I would have done those at naps, too, but my boys didn't nap in their cribs until it was too warm for that!

As a note to that, we started out dressing them warmer, and found out that they were sweating through if we added an extra layer. It was a little bit of trial and error the first couple of weeks. The "what you'd wear plus a layer" just didn't work for my boys, but dressing them like us did.

Out of the house, we did long sleeved onesie, pants (usually fleece), socks, hat, and the fleece carseat covers. We started out tucking a blanket on top of them under the carseat cover, and ... yeah, they sweat through. We never took them outside OTHER than in their carseats so we didn't wind up needing any other buntings or anything.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!

Since you're in chilly New England...One Step Ahead makes wonderful fleece bunting outfits that have built-in mittens and footies. I like them b/c they have legs so you can strap your babies into their stroller/car seat while wearing them.

I think my girls are cold blooded like me.

When they were first born, we'd do onsies and socks (at night) under footed sleepers. Swaddled during the day, we'd use one blanket. At night...we'd double swaddle and put a hat on :) They did sleep much better this way! Our bedroom can be pretty cold though (french doors to a balcony with no drapes yet  )

It really can vary depending on the baby. For all of mine by the time we left the hospital they were doing well at maintaining their body temps. I'd put them in something similar to what I was wearing with a onesie underneath. Like if I was wearing long sleeves and jeans, I'd put them in a cotton sleeper with a onesie under it. Then if we were somewhere drafty or chilly, I'd throw a light blanket over top. (Don't let my location fool you! We lived up north when all my babies were born!) If we were going outside and I needed a jacket or coat, I'd put a good hat on them and a thick blanket over them in the car seat. I only had the fleece car seat covers for the twins so I only put a light blanket under those.

The best way to figure out if they are dressed warm enough is to feel their bellies/backs. Hands, feet and cheeks are usually colder than the rest of them and the core temp is what really matters most. I use my inner forearm across their belly because my hands are always cold so they feel warmer than they really are.

I hope that helps and congrats on your babies!

When the girls were tiny we kept the house between 70 and 72 and they wore cotton sleepers and swaddled in an flannel blanket, and I put a little cotton hat on them too. They LIVED in cotton sleepers... if we were going out, I put a onesie underneath and then we had fleece snowsuits for them or we used the bundleme's on the car seats. GL with the rest of your pg!

:wavey: Jennifer, I'm in MA too!!

When the girls were born, our pedi always told us to put them in one layer more than we would dress ourselves. Like several pp's, that meant onesies and sleepers and swaddling for the chilly winter months. We loved our Bundle Me's that went right onto the car seat, because that meant no snowsuit, but I always put hats on them.

My twins were born in February. We didn't have the Bundle Me's but did put them in a fleece bunting and hat when we went outdoors, usually to a warmed up car so they weren't out in the cold too much. In the house, we usually had them in a onesie and a cotton sleeper. At night, the onesie with a blanket sleeper. In their bouncy seats they usually had a blanket over their legs to help with the warmth. We usually kept those little cotton hats on them as well. We kept the house at around 68 degrees.

I remember coming home one day when I left my MIL with them while I ran out. She had turned the heat up to about 72 and put them in their cribs with blankets over them  . I took the blankets off. Still to this day, she will wonder if they are cold because she is (she spends 1/2 the year in FLA). So I tell them they need to put a sweater on because Grandma is cold. :p

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

ETA: Someone told me they saw the Bundle Me's at TJ Maxx last week.
