Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Becky, I am 38 years old and am 9 weeks 3 days pregnant with twins. We just found out last Tuesday and were VERY surprised to find out that there were two, after getting over the initial shock of expecting at all. My DH and I already have a DS, 15 years old and in 9th grade and a DD, 12 and in 6th grade, and have been married for 18 years in February (just a little too much celebration I think). Needless to say at this time in our lives we were through having kids but I guess God had a different plan for us so now we are starting all over.

I have been very nervous and apprehensive about this pregnancy, given my age, but my first two pregnancies were very healthy (DS born at 40w4d, 9lbs.4oz., DD born at 40w exactly, 10lbs.2oz.). So far the main symptoms I have been experiencing has been round ligament pain, nausea, extreme exhaustion and serious hunger. The nausea seems to have passed now at least but it's hard to not eat all the time.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the wealth of information on here and look forward to many more words of wisdom and personal experiences. I stay home alone all day long until kids get out of school at 3:30 so it's kind of boring around here.

Do eat all the time if you can... It's one of the perks- losing the weight with twinfants isn't so hard & the bigger they are the healthier they are.

    Welcome!

Ha, Ha! - Celebrating TOO much! I love it. I think no matter what, twins are always a big shock. I won't ever forget how speechless my husband was when we saw two blips on our ultrasound at 7 weeks! My advice? Eat A LOT (when else in your life are you going to get permission to do THAT?). I recommend the Barbara Luke book, "What to expect when you are expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads." Good nutrition information and I partially credit it with getting my boys to 39weeks and 7lbs each. Having your previous kids at good weights increases your chances, too. And I think it is wonderful that you have the older kids; I know you don't want to make them babysitters but I bet they will be so proud of their siblings and help out a lot. The barista at my local coffee shop is in his 20s and has 10 year old twin sisters; we always "talk twins" when I am in there and it is obvious how awesome he thinks they are. So, congratulations and welcome! Take a deep breath and enjoy the ride. :youcandoit: -Debbi

Thanks guys for all the well wishes. We keep laughing about the curves that life throws at you sometimes. Not only is our anniversary in February but my DH's birthday is also on the same day (he turned 42). So we have one baby for each event this time around. My older kids are thrilled for the most part and I don't think we will hurt in the way of babysitters but I keep having horrific dreams about them dropping one of the babies while we aren't here and it already has me very nervous!

The doctor's office called today to give me my pap results and I did ask whether or not they were able to tell if the babies were fraternal or identical and was told no, that it was too early. They are in their own sacs separated by a membrane but for the life of us we cannot even see the placenta (I'm guessing it's across the top of the sacs), only that one fetus is attached in the middle of the top of the sac, which is more horizontal, and the other's umbilical cord is coming off of the membrane separating the two sacs. The second sac is to the right and is more vertical. This will drive me crazy for sure since I'm not a very patient person anyways. All I know is that I'm almost 10 weeks but look much bigger. I was 8 weeks and measuring 11 weeks last week but I feel like my belly has exploded since then. I can literally feel my uterus growing. Definitely an experience I've never had before.

Congratulations and welcome! I would guess from your description that your twins are likely di/di, which means they could be identical or fraternal. Since there is a membrane separating them it would seem more likely that they'll each have their own placenta.

Wishing you the best in your pregnancy!

    Congratulations on your twins!!!

Your twins sound a lot like mine. They are in seperate sacs but they are sharing a placenta. We found out they were sharing a placenta at about 16 weeks and confirmed it with a Level 2 Ultrasound last week at 17 weeks. And I'm with everyone else.. EAT your body needs it and so do your babies! I eat every 2 hours right now and have only gained 12 lbs so far :)
