Hi! I'm new to the forum. Actually I've been lurking for a week now. I'm so happy to have found this! I'm 12 weeks pregant and was so surprised to find out I was having twins (and very excited!!).

I have a question about ob/gyns. How often do you all see your ob/gyn? My ob said once a month until 24 weeks and then every 2 weeks after that. But I've been told by others (another MD but not OB) that I should be seen every other week b/c I may have more problems carrying b/c I had fertility problems. (tried for 2 years, 3 IUIs, and then got pg on the first ivf cycle!) and I'm over 35.

I'd love to hear about others experiences...

Just from reading on the boards I really think it depends on the dr. some of us have been every 2-3 weeks from the beginning and others were seen once a month until a certain point.

Me personally, I was seen every 3 weeks and then it went down to 2 weeks and then recently I waited 4 weeks. I go to one of those practices where you see a number of different drs. and it really has just depended on which one I saw at the time.

I didn't go through fertility treatments this time but with my singleton I got pregnant through injectibles and IUI and I was seen every 3 weeks till 24ish weeks and went to every other week. But mine had nothing to do with fertility reasons. My first son was born with multiple birth defects so they were keeping a close eye on me.

Although I didn't really answer your question- because I don't have all those factors this time around to give you a clear experience. I just think it will depend on the dr. as far as what I've read here on TS.

Hi & congrats on your twins! My situation was about the same as yours-fertility problems for years, 3 IUI's, & got pregnant on my 2nd IVF cycle at age 36. I saw my OB every 4 weeks until 24 weeks, then every 2 weeks, then weekly starting at 30 weeks. My OB also sent me to a perinatologist starting at 18 weeks. I saw him for ultrasounds every 4 weeks. My babies were born healthy at 37 weeks. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Even my OB/GYN was going to see me every 2-3 weeks, right from the beginning. They ended up giving me an uneasy feeling because I had to rotate through the group and no one appeared able to review my chart before seeing me, so every time I was there they were asking me why I was there (uh, because I am PG - with TWINS!!)

Anyways, call it mommy's intuition, but I switched to a peri at 13 weeks. He had me coming in every 3 weeks, then it would switch to every 2 in the middle of the second trimester. Best move I made because 3 weeks later at my next appointment, he caught my non-existant cervix length and saved my pregnancy. They also got me past a very scary 24 weeks potential delivery, and I made it 7 more weeks.

As a fellow IF'er, I highly recommend you see a peri and make sure that your cervix length is being measured regularly (like every 2-3 weeks, more often if they find it shortening). This should start in your second trimester. Many OB's do not do this, but most peri's do. It's a simple T/V U/S measurement and can save our pregnancy.

Hopefully you breeze right through your pregnancy with absolutely no problems. But in case anything pops up, you'll be glad you sought out a peri.

I agree with pp find out if you can see a peri. They say with multiples and doing IVF is a higher risk so see if you can get in with one. Of course everything can go fine and you will do great.

I know alot of that comes from being monitored so frequently with IF stuff and then to be 'pushed' aside makes you feel uncomfortable. I know because I have been there.

I also switched from my reg. OB to the high risk place at 12 weeks and I am so glad I did because I was monitored differently and it made me feel at ease.

Do what you think is best. Listen to your gut.

This sounds pretty normal. I was seeing my OB every 2 weeks from the beginning, but many ppl said she was being very cautious. It's her normal protocol. I did IVF so I understand about fertility treatments, but my OB never mentioned this as an issue. I know two other women who didn't start appts. every 2 weeks until 20 and 24 weeks. I've heard it can be individual to doctors. HTH!

I would say that your OB offered 'standard' care. BUT since you are a fertility patient and these are your 1st, they shoudl be more proactive since they do not know how you react to pregnancy. You could request more frequent visits or call other OBs and see what they offer twin pregnancies.

Also a lot of people see both a Peri AND an OB so you end up seeing someone every 1-2 weeks instead of every 2-4.

I would very firmly ask for more observation and/or ask your fertility clinic for a Dr they recc. since they deal with a lot of 'high risk' women!

I see the OB once a month and I get an U/S once a month and I am 25w2d.

I'm sure your doctor is right in whatever time frames he or she sets your appointment for.

It definitly depends on the doctor. I was seeing my doctor monthly until 29 weeks. He wants me to start coming in every two weeks at 31 weeks. I was suprised he didn't see me more becasue of the IUGR and bedrest and all. But he is a GREAT OB and he also wants me to have nonstress tests everyweek until I deliver. We didn't know it was twins till the first u/s at 20 weeks and then he said he would still treat me like any other singleton pregnancy unless I got complications. My first pregnacy with my son I had a different OB and he was having me in every two weeks most of the pregnacy and every week towards the end due to IUGR and lack of weight gain. If you feel you need to be seen more or want a specialist, by all means, please ask. I adore my OB...I feel blessed.

Welcome to Twinstuff!! Congrats on your twins. I am glad you decided to de-lurk!

I also saw a peri along with my OB. No other reason than just being high risk due to having twins, but it made me feel so much better. The peri did a growth u/s at every visit and I just felt like they were more knowledgeable about twins then a regular OB and it made me feel a lot better, plus I loved having all the u/s.

I would encourage you to join our Big Sister Program. You will be matched up with another Mom with older twins. She will support you throughout your pregnancy and beyond and answer any questions you have. Click on the link in my signature for more information. It's a great program.

I look forward to getting to know you better.

I was with a high risk OB but I saw him every 4 weeks till I was 30 weeks and then it was every 2 weeks till I was 34 weeks and then weekly till I delivered my two at 38 weeks. Never did any NST's or had any cervical checks. I did however have u/s at every single appt to check growth, fluid and heartbeats of babies.

They were a result of my 2nd IVF...I had been TTC for 5 years and had had 7 IUI's and 2 IVF's.
