I've been on bed rest since 24 weeks and in the past 4 weeks I only gained 2 pounds. I am worried because baby A is only in the 27th percentile (baby B is 48th). I've heard that maternal weight gain slows down on bed rest. Do you find it to be true for you?

hi, I have been on bed rest since 21 weeks and am now almost 27 weeks. I have found that it has been challenging to gain weight also! I eat at least 3 meals a day with snacks but one i am just not as hungry on bed rest and two I have started to get heartburn so my meals are smaller. what my doc recommended was high fat snacks in between meals like ice cream , dounuts, protein drinks, rice, and once and a while fast food........ it has worked for me so far i've managed to gain at least a pound a week. I hope this helps!

    Thanks!

Wow, I find it somewhat disturbing that a doctor will recommend fast food :shok:
I mean, we all indulge every once in a while, but to actually hear it from a doctor...
I've already gained around 25-30lbs this pregnancy, but I heard the third trimester is the most important.

I have been on bedrest since 29 weeks and I noticed a slowing in weight gain at first, but it definately started back up after my body adjusted. Your doctor will let you know if they are concerned about you weight gain. I actually went two weeks with weight loss right after starting bedrest. It was about 11 pounds, but my doctor wasn't concerned because my belly was growing!

Several people talk on this site about drinking protein shakes to aid the babies in weight gain. I did not do this, but think it might be worth checking in to if you are worried about it!

    Good luck and take care!

I went in the hospital on full bed rest a week ago at 28 weeks, due to a ruptured bag but had been on self-imposed bed rest at home for a few weeks. I just found out today that I've lost 11 pounds in 3 weeks. They are sending up a nutritionist some time today to get me on a plan. Although it is 1:37 and I'm still waiting on lunch, so that could be part of the problem...

    Sally,
They let you go home with a ruptured bag? I didn't know you could do that... How far along are you now?

I've been on bedrest since 27 weeks i'm now 30 weeks but I haven't gained any weight the entire time i've been pregnant. My husband and I have both addressed this issue with my DR but he isn't concerned since the babies estimated weight is normal and I'm growing at a normal pace. I eat 6 small meals a day and a snack. Should I be concerned that I'm not gaining weight? This is my first pregnancy and I'm not sure what to expect.

one thing to keep in mind is that mucsle is heavier then fat. on bed rest you are not using as many muscle and in the begining can lose mucsle weight.

i too have found it difficult to gain weight on bedrest. For one, i'm simply not hungry. i mean, my tummy rumbles, but i have no appetite at all. Nothing looks good or sounds good. DH is encouraging me to eat as much as i want whenever i want, but i'm having difficulty with it. i get 1/2 a sandwich down and am full, but i know that isnt enough calories. Baby's weights are good though still. Only 6% difference a week ago at U/S.

Actually according to Dr. Luke's book, with a multiple pregnancy the weight you gain by 28 weeks is the most important and linked to the best outcomes and birth weights for babies! So do what you can to keep gaining, but be encouraged; it's great you had already gained 25-30 lbs! (And the protein shakes, premium ice cream, etc.--hamburgers, too! more protein and iron!--are a good idea.)

Haven't read all other posts, but I've found this to be the case with me. Your activity level plummets and if you're feeling down, your appetite isn't helped. Suffering bad morn sickness had not helped either.

I was also put on the gest diabetes diet which seemed to do more harm to our case of TTTS. (Maternal malnutrtion seems to play a roll in TTTS.)

I ignored my gest diab. diet (I was borderline anyways) and focused on nutrient rich foods and proteins. I ate all thru-out the day plus I had nurses on my case! I did the high protein therapy diet for TTTS, and I think it paid off. I gained the same weight with twins as I did with my singletons, and they weighed 5 lbs. and 6 lbs. 12 oz. at 34 weeks. . . pretty good for that gest. age, I think. But I certainly had a hard time gaining weight between 19 to 25 weeks.
