I am wondering if this might be helpful for me to get a sling to wear one of my babies so I can have both hands. My dd is 4 lbs 7 oz and db is 5 lbs 6 oz.

What kind of sling? Is this a good idea... yet? Any input??

The sling I have never worked for me. I don't know why but it just wasn't comfortable. Once the girls were about 6lbs each we started using the baby bjorns (I know they were smaller than the recommended weight, but it worked and they were fine). They liked being close and hearing our heartbeats and being snuggly warm. And on those days when Meara just had to be held every waking and sleeping moment, it allowed us to get work done and hold Ana too. Now at 8 months old we still use the bjorns (Dh and I both have one) and its not uncomfortable even though they are about 17lbs each and I'm a small person.

Thx Leighann. :) I guess I could wait until they get a bit bigger and use our carriers (we have the jeep carriers and I think they are just like the bjorn). Clara just wants to be held by me all the time and I'm trying to figure out how to do that and still get things done (make bottles, fix lunch, etc ;) ).

Grayson is hopefully coming home tomorrow and that will add a whole other dimension to the problem!! Thanks for asking about him.

I'd highly recommend a Moby Wrap!

    http://www.mom4life.com/catalog.php?item=38

I used a Moby Wrap nearly constantly with my 2nd child and it was really great to be able to have him laying against my chest just like I'd hold him, but held securely by the wrap which is very comfortable and secure enough to allow both hands free for Mom. I used it with him not only as a newborn, (and throughout his infancy) but also when he was a year old and we went on a camping trip out west and I'd hike for many miles with him on me and even with him being 24 lbs, it was still very comfortable.

I can't say enough good things about the Moby Wrap style sling. There is a bit of a "knack" for getting used to putting it on, but once you get it, you get it and it is so worth it. I also have a Maya Ring Sling, a pouch sling, an Ellaroo Wrap and a Mei Tai, which all have their good points (and some have things I don't like), but especially for a tiny new baby, I love the comfort and security of the Moby Wrap.

(My twins will be here in a few months and I plan on using my Moby Wrap with both babies at the same time for at least awhile. I figure if I could hike with my son in it when he was 24 lbs, I should be able to sling both twins for quite awhile!)

    Good luck! :)

I like the Moby wrap, you can wear twins. I haven't tried that yet but I think it works well with my preemies.

congrats on your babies; they have such lovely names. And here's to grayson coming home soon!

I also liked the Moby; it DOES take a little while to get the hang of it, so i would definitely practice (I had a hilarius moment with my MIL at midnight the first week i got out of the hospital while they were in the NICU : I 'practiced' using two teddy bears; we were in the kind of hysterics that only happen when you're REALLY sleep deprived....

I also liked how it held them close, but i found that i had to practice to make sure they werne't scrunched against me w/their neck in an odd position. I tried wearing them both but that was pretty challenging, and it only worked a few times while they were still small.

don't know where you live but i sometimes see them for sale on craigslist; but the convenience factor of having it delivered won out for me, and at about $32 online it was worth it.

I also have a bjorn; mine is a bit older, but there is a closure where their legs go that you HAVE to close if they are below a certain size/weight, so check into that so they don't slip through.

I used the moby wrap and carried both girls (mine were 7 1/2 and 6 1/2 at birth) and loved it. It gives so many options. I have carried them individually while dh wears one in the bjorn. It does take some work to get on but I love all the options. I plan to use it to carry them for as long as I can!
    Good luck and Congrats!

We have 5 lb. babies and are using Infantino sling from Target for now. It's a sling pouch. It's bulky, but distributes weight easily on me and is very secure for babies. We are thinking of trying a peanut shell sling too.

A Moby definately or even a ring type sling.

Unfortunately my babies did not like slings. They did like the Moby Wrap though. It technically gave me free hands to pick up another baby but I never felt comfortable doing that - my boys were too floppy. I did unload the dish washer in it and go to the bathroom (not at the same time).

I tried a hotsling and a mei-tai and my son hated both. The bjorn worked well for short periods, but he'd get heavy pretty quickly.

I love my Ergo sling. I've carried three kids with it so far and its my favorite. However, I've heard that the Moby is awesome for carrying twins while they are still small. Once the twins get bigger, its really hard to wear them at the same time. I use a Sutemi sling and my Ergo to wear both at the same time when they are both screaming and won't calm down. I use the Sutemi in front and the Ergo in back. Works great. The Ergo has an infant insert that is wonderful, but its for one baby only. I've never liked Baby Bjorns because of how the baby's legs dangle in it. I've read that it is potentially injurious to a baby's hips to have their legs dangle. According to the article I read, the baby's legs are supposed to be in a "frog leg" position (flexed, like they are in a ring sling or Moby wrap or the Ergo, for instance). Anyway, that's my two cents on the subject! :D

I love the New Native Baby Carrier. It also has a support pillow for newborns. I do have to say that I've never even tried anything else, so I don't have anything to compare it to. My oldest daughter used it, and now with the twins, my husband and I both wear a baby.

my girls were around your twins' weights when they were born (4lb12oz and 5lb10oz) and 1 of them was colicky while still much too small for the bjorn. we got 2 ring slings as gifts and used them constantly for the first 2 months. there was a specific "colic hold" that worked wonders for lily and i felt so much better being able to have my hands free to eat dinner during her fussy/crying periods at night. i will say, however, that once the girls got big enough for the bjorn (8lbs), i prefer those as they are much easier to wear and easier on your back...

I wish I'd tried the Moby Wrap when they were little - it looks really great. I was just so sleep deprived that I was terrified to even TRY to figure out how to tie the thing on!

We tried a Peanut Shell sling when DS was too small for the Bjorn, and it never really clicked for us. Nobody could really get comfortable. That could easily be user error on my end, though. ;)
