Hello!! We had our babies on Sunday morning at 35 weeks 3 days (they said the twins showed at 36 weeks) Lidea was 5lbs 3.3 oz 18 inches and Levi was 5 lbs 18 1/2 inches. Levi never left out side and Lidea was with us for the first 8 hours but then her O2 was dropping so she spent a few hours in the NICU. She is barely on any O2 now and we are all home! With all that said... Levi failed in one ear the first test and then past the second. Lidea failed one ear the first test then failed both today. They said it could be fluid. We have to take her back in a few weeks. Has anyone else experienced this and what was the results? I have just been praying it is fluid and nothing more since she passed one ear then neither.

I don't have any btdt advice, but wanted to send some hugs your way! I'm thinking maybe it is fluid if she did pass earlier. Either way, I'll be thinking of you! Let us know how she makes out!

My nephew (a singleton) was born full term in April and failed his first two hearing tests. They, too, said it might be fluid. The few weeks we had to wait before he went to a specialist for another test were torture - every time he didn't respond to a noise we thought the worst.
He was about a month old when he went to a hearing specialist - and passed with flying colors. He's 7 months old now and hears perfectly. I hope it all works out for you, but know that even failing the next test won't be the end of the world - there're so many incredible advances out there.
    Congrats on your babies!

No experience personally but I did have a friend that her preemie failed like 4 times and then when sent to a specialist, everything was fine :)

They even told me in the NICU it was possible for my 34weekers to fail the hearing test and it really didnt mean a whole lot except to expect follow up tests but we ended up passing @ the hospital.

I am sure its just the fluid ;) relax and enjoy those 2 new babies!

I'm an audiologist. Most like the referral on the hearing test was due to fluid/debris in the ear but please be sure to follow through with any recommended testing. She should be followed up with a diagnostic ABR. These screenings have been made universal (for the most part in the US) in order to identify hearing loss at the earliest age possible so that these children get the most access to sound as early as possible to aid in speech and language development (among other things). Doing the test at a very young age is so much better than when they are older infants, not only due to speech/lang development but also for the practicality of running the test.

Congratulations on your twins!!! I don't have any experience with hearing issues with the twins, but I hope it's just fluid due to imaturity also. Please let us know how it evolves. Good luck!

Both of my boys failed four hearing tests in a row. We then had to take them to get myringotomy tubes put in their ears and since then one has passes and one has failed. My one little guy still has fluid and only one fuctioning tube so we are going back to get his right tube redone and then go for hearing tests again. It can be very stressful but hang in there

Congrats! This is actually very common. The machine actually measures how the eardrum responds to soundwaves bouncing off of it, so if anything is blocking the ear canal or if there is not a good seal on the equipment it doesn't work. Try not to stress about it because you will have enough other stuff going on! I'm sure they will pass at their next visit.

One of our girls failed her hearing test and we took her back at 6 months and she passed with flying colors. It was just fluid. Pretty common. In fact, one of my best friends just adopted a girl from China and was told she was deaf (the tests were run on her at 3 months). They got her back to the US and the Drs here ran tests and her hearing is just fine. Good luck and welcome to the FY forum!!

Both of mine failed their first test, & DD failed 3 tests before she passed the 5th one. They were born at 36 weeks. I was told that because they were c-section babies, the fluid did not get pushed out of their ears in the birth canal, which most likely explained the failed hearing tests.

When did they perform the hearing test? (How old were they?) We left the hospital with DD when she was 26 hours old, and they did the hearing screen (I am in Canada and it's just a screening) and she failed. We were, like you, SO worried. We had to follow up with Public Health and get her re-tested a month later and she passed no problem!

The hospital told us that if they test too early, a lot of times there is mucuous, etc in their ears and they fail b/c of that.

Hopefully it was just because they did it too early and/or there was fluid in baby's ear.

our "baby B" failed her hearing test in the hospital (born 35 weeks as well). We did have her retested at 1 month I think and she passed the brainstem test with a LONG time, they say if you pass you pass, but we took her for a second opinion and another test at 2 months and she passed. No issues now.

they did blame pre-maturity and fluid, as well as a delayed auditory processing development due to the prematurity. Language is now excellent. Don't worry yet, wait unit the re-test. good luck!

She was tested at 1 day and passed one ear then tested the next day and failed both ears. We return on Dec 21st for another test.
